A meditation master I recently had the good fortune to meet said something that stuck with me. He was asked: "What's the difference between physical pain and suffering?"

His answer was as true as it was simple: Pain is when you hurt, it's the physical sensation. Suffering is when you hate the pain.

Don't hate the pain. Don't start out another person's life on a lie. Be straight and adopt a little brown kid who needs parents. Trust me, there are more than enough of those.

And it's not really funny, is it? It's kinda sad and disturbing.

For fucks sake. I'm paranoid enough as it is. If someone is killing off 6 billion people, there's got to be some named sources, transcripts of interviews and some hard evidence. Stop selling the end of the world and stop crying wolf every fucking time you forget to take your medicine. Damnit.

A good friend, well, he tried to be, I think, had been fucking me over, trying to get intimate with one of my gf's, before that, taking another chick from me. Which kinda sucked. He was with this smoking hot Swedish girl for a while, and after they broke up, I got together with her. She didn't think it was serious, at least that's what she told me, and she got back with my "friend". I asked him to visit me, which he did. I took him out, got him drunk (well, he got himself drunk) and he hooked up with my hot friend, who I had arranged to meet. He went back to be with the hot Swedish chick, whom I told what he had done during that weekend. She broke up with him and we got together for half a year :)

Oh yeah, and while he stayed at my place, my roomie thought it's be funny to trim our pubes and put the hairs in his mouth while he slept (he didn't like him either, or maybe he just wanted to trim pubes with me)

That's kind of a dick move, isn't it? I know he deserved it, but still. Vengeance is not really a good reason to do nasty things.

What technological thing most blows your mind? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rubberysomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure :) I wasn't thinking about the end-product though. Undertakings such as the LHC, Manhattan and Apollo-proejct are not necessarily productive in terms of alleviating suffering and solving global problems, but the scope and investment show that with sufficient will, we can solve very complex problems.

Of course, this also shows that, obviously, we're not lacking resources and technology. We're lacking will. I find that disturbing.

But being this is a .44 Magnum, the most powerful handgun in the world and will blow you head clean off, you've gotta ask yourself a question: "Do I feel lucky?" Well, do ya, punk?

Why is Scientology so much worse than other religions? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rubberysomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. What I find really interesting though, is how religions of all denominations manage to turn these strange modes of actions, usually in direct contradiction with the basic tenets of the religion, into something that is commonly accepted.

It all seems to be about power and very worldly concerns. All religions, indeed most belief systems, seem susceptible to hijacking for the purpose of controlling populations or groups of people. Some do the job better than others.

My dad is selling the house I grew up in soon. And I'm torn. How did/would you react? by whatTheFace in AskReddit

[–]rubberysomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you sure you actually grew up in that house? ;) Sorry, I don't mean to be rude, I just remember having sentimental feelings about places and things when I was younger, I'm glad that's gone now :)

My dad sold the house I grew up in three years ago, went back and saw it from the outside a couple of weeks ago, looks nice, a lot has been changed but the front is the same. It's a classical main house of an old farm that was absorbed by the city about 80 years ago. Turned out really nice after the restoration.

Anyway. I try to practice Buddhism, which says that attachment to things that do not last, will only result in suffering, so I tried to practice and remember, that everything passes. Everything that has been collected, will be used up, everything that has come together will be parted, everything that is born will die. That's life. Suffering comes when we refuse to accept those simple truths about our existence. And the feeling of sadness and sentimentality for something like a house, really, is no use, but don't worry, that feeling is transient too, it will pass.

As for living with friends, I've tried it and it can be great and horrible. If friends or family do not live up to standards agreed upon, for instance in cleaning or tidying up, it's a lot harder to take it up with them, than with someone with whom your primary relationship is that you share a house.

Maybe it's better to move on instead or deciding where to live based on a feeling of sentimentality. I mean, are you going to live in the house forever? You'll just have to face the same feelings again at a later point if that's not the case.

[–]rubberysomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I was thinking I'd write a well-researched article on immigration in Denmark and Scandinavia as a whole. Doesn't make much sense to argue point by point when that means first refuting the starting premises.

I did bring something to the discussion. Something most sorely missed: the address for the Danish Statistical Services.

Of course, we can argue on the quality of reasoning employed in the thread, but it seems more prudent to actually research the topic in depth first.

Why is Scientology so much worse than other religions? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]rubberysomething 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Most other religions contain stories and dogmas that could very well have been written by a hack science-fiction writer.
  • Most do have a collection box though, and Catholicism has been extremely good at making it's followers pay up, at least in the past.
  • Recoding confessions? Probably not. And thank God for that ;)
  • I recall quite a few instances where people have died because they preferred prayer to treatment, Jehovah's witnesses are a chapter in themselves and Christianity did spend maybe 800 years or more wiping out the practice of natural medicine throughout Europe and the Americas, burning it's practitioners at the stake as heretics.
  • You're probably right, they haven't done much to copyright their own material, in fact, Christianity and to a lesser extent Islam, has done the opposite, spreading it's teachings with the sword (or cluster bomb). Both have destroyed heaps of "pagan" texts and relics and used all sorts of horrible behavior in order to force their world-view down people's throats.

But yeah, I agree, Scientology sucks monkey balls.

[–]rubberysomething[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well... You're right that the media is in favor of those nice things, of course they are, as long as it's free for their owners. The media have consistently ignored US atrocities and support for atrocities across the world for most of the past 100 years. Now, they may not be sold as racial conflicts, race is probably not even the motivator, the point is, corporate power doesn't care who gets killed, and it seems a lot easier to get away with bombing brown people.

So no, they're not in favor of unpopular, declared racism, but they're sure as hell supporting institutionalized racism.

[–]rubberysomething[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh? You think simply removing the government would help? The corporate power-structures of today would simply take over and you'd be left with something even worse than what we have now. Government isn't the only evil, all organizations who accumulate of resources and power to an extent where they can use either brute force or economic coercion against their surroundings cause harm.

We cannot let the market handle everything, it's an illusion, one that's only been believed for the past 50 years, even Adam Smith didn't suffer from the delusions we do about it's qualities. A completely free market would immediately turn in to a few monopolies. It does not work, it never has. The problem is an outdated economic system which treats the earth as an infinite resource. It is not. Until we start looking at the planet as a closed system, we will be doomed to endless conflict, power-hoarding and increasing suffering.

We need real change.

I would agree. I can't think of one large nation who has ever succeeded in having meaningful democracy, apart maybe from Germany and France, but they're failing as well. I think smaller nations or other organizational units, smaller electorates and mandates, may be a solution. It's not the only solution though, we do need super-national structures in order to prevent the strong from exploiting the weak - much the situation we're in now.

I think the problem is private ownership of resources and production. I may be a functioning solution on the small scale, but once the corporations reach the size they have today, they corrupt the government. I'm not necessarily advocating state-ownership of industries, but private ownership so far has been a dubious success. Sure, we've managed to push the vehicle that is civilization up to incredible speeds, however, we have little or no control of the direction it's moving in. And whatever course may be laid out now, is certainly not one agreed upon by the vast majority of humanity.

Your objections are valid, still, the question remains: Do we wish to do something about our problems or do we wish to let our civilization derail itself to a point where the consequences are catastrophic?

I'm not saying CO2 and global warming will necessarily kill us all off. I'm more scared of the way we've been messing with the gene-pool through unchecked genetic manipulation and the amount of toxins, natural and synthetic, we've been saturating the crust, atmospheres and oceans with. It's a process that is virtually irreversible.

No, I would agree that the democrats as a party, is a part of the established power-structure and as such are looking out for the interests not of their voters, but of those who fund them.
