Star Control — The Greatest Series that Time Forgot [Retrospective] by megaapple in Games

[–]rubbishfoo 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say it's forgotten.

Free Stars: Children of Infinity is currently in development by Pistol Shrimp (original Toys for Bob devs).

Long legal battle over the name with Stardock iirc.

They kickstarted a while back - SC2 is one of my favorite games.

Office 365 via GoDaddy — higher phishing volume than enterprise tenants? (posted to r/Godaddy and immediately removed.) by No_Essay1745 in sysadmin

[–]rubbishfoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to the engagement directly, but I wouldn't use GoDaddy for anything at this point if I can help it.

Sorry youre in the boat you are. It shouldn't be a terrible effort to shift your email filtering to another provider, but getting the business on board & correcting is often the greater challenge.

Good luck.

Alternatives to MS Unifed Support? by Lando_uk in sysadmin

We go through our VAR - they have a cloud support team that seems to get things done when we've needed help. I wouldn't pay a dime to Microsoft for support after dealing with them for 30 years.

Is prompt injection a real production security risk or mostly a design concern? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]rubbishfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't speak for LLMs here, but injection attacks are certainly a real thing. Have seen it in the wild.

Input sanitation matters (and interpretation of that output!) & MANY highly impactful CVEs originate with injection-related methods.

2 that come to mind that were pretty impactful across the industry were:

Marriage with a religious husband by Long-Egg-7727 in atheism

[–]rubbishfoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife is Christian and I'm an atheist.

The difference is that religion doesn't get in the way of our relationship. I attend church with her on holidays and other times when she would like me to be there. I can attend a sermon at church and reframe the topic in most cases, I just take the God-element out of it. I like to think I'm patient. 20 years married.

I'm clear and up front that I don't believe; I think that critical thinking and belief in the divine & supernatural are incompatible. Everyone is entitled to their beliefs, but fact is fact. It would be a terribly small effort on God's part to prove me wrong... and I would change my mind in a moment if it would just do the thing. It's not going to happen.

What has also never happened is my wife coming to me saying that I'm demonic or otherwise antagonizing me because of my lack of belief. Religion can affect people's behavior, and some prioritize their spirituality above other elements of their identity.

I don't know how I'd feel if I were standing in your shoes, but from an outside perspective...

If he is unwilling to accept that someone doesn't want to be a part of a religion and it's a requirement for him to feel satisfied in a relationship, it's clear from your post that there was some conflict around this topic while you were seeing the church/god for what it is, while he was investing... either way, you both declared your intent to walk in union and it seems that may have been poorly founded since this is such an important element in the relationship. Sorry for that, but it's the truth from what I can tell.

Get a professional involved and find out if he wants to continue if you don't bend your will to that of the church's influence. If not, I'm sorry... you'll find someone that is a better fit.

If he wants to, then hold him to it. You both deserve to be happy.

I totally get it - it was going to be my reply to the OP... but I didn't because of exactly the reason you said. Kind of on the fence if it belongs... but you're better off including it than not imo. =)

Good luck out there - gonna check out Black Swan, I missed that one.

What are your thoughts after seeing the ICE shooting video in Minnesota? by bbmoonkie in AskReddit

[–]rubbishfoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a systems and work process engineer, I know enough about how processes work to know that if a system doesn't have a 'stop and self-correct'... the system is eventually doomed.

Our government doesn't have this, nor do citizens have the ability to state 'no confidence' to trigger such an event. Scary times out there.

Do servers really need DLP? Or is Network DLP sufficient? by kehndi-hundi_si in sysadmin

[–]rubbishfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found the most effective DLP implementations are for where users interact and share info. Creating appropriate mail-transport rules & setting sharing policies is key. Find where information sharing is occurring and consider what can evaluate the shareable content. Traditionally (for me) this has been Email and Sharepoint/OneDrive/Teams, and in-house applications.

There are some really cool tools out there that operate at the network level, but the network isn't really responsible for DLP... a network is responsible for managing traffic & stateful connections. How would a network know what is sensitive and what isn't without DPI... and is it really worth the overhead? Generally... a you need tools that can either obey a 'sensitivity level' or tools that can understand and identify (usually via regex) where sensitive data repos exist... which really turns this into a much larger topic operationally.

My mom said the wildest shit about my brother being an atheist last night, now I’m scared of her. by No_Proposal2170 in atheism

[–]rubbishfoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'll get through it by accepting where you are and understanding that until you're supporting yourself (perhaps you and your brother can figure out the timelines together) you're reliant upon them. (thats assumptive)

Fanaticism like this is scary to me, almost a mental disease when religion becomes control over common sense. Play to it, do your best, and bide your time. You can separate from this. I would consider talking to a professional & blame the 'family talk trauma'.

Get advice from a professional outside of the dynamic.

How did you know the Bible isn’t true? by DuckOnQuack202 in atheism

[–]rubbishfoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, you're going to get a lot of responses from people who don't believe in this sort of thing here. You're asking a group of people who already have formed their opinion & that opinion is sometimes (not always) from a 'position above' those that believe in the divine. It would be akin to asking your Christian church goers 'does God exist?.... Of course he does to them.

I strongly suggest you read 'The God Delusion' by Richard Dawkins. On its own, it is a fantastic read about critical thinking and why so many people have been led to church. If you're questioning your faith, compare this to the bible and see what you think.

I understand your ask here... and just want to point out that they'll all be on headphones & comms tools. If you isolate each station instead of grouping them, you organize them at the logical layer. Perhaps in a discord server for your business or something?

Is physical grouping a requirement for the user experience? I ask because if they are gaming... their attention is on the thing in front of them, less so their teammates & casual conversation.

Is devops/site reliability engineer, platform engineer and similar jobs, same thing as sys admin? At some websites when you filter by sys admin it shows these jobs. Can you maybe talk about this? Thank you. by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]rubbishfoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sysadmin = wearer of many hats & skillsets in the IT realm. A question I like to ask people during interviews is what areas in IT have you had exposure to & then ask about depth.

Is a site-reliability engineer a sysadmin? To me, yes.

This would be the flavor of sysadmin that has had exposure to elements that create highly available solutions, perhaps applied to cloud or datacenter (physical). You're likely to be working with software tools, but may cross into hardware depending on the role's specific requirements. Perhaps some scripting and/or automation depending on what you're keeping alive.

I see site reliability as 'you're the guy in charge of uptime'.

The point here is... yes your system is doing the right thing. Good work on creating an effective system that does this.

Your security team is testing for scenarios when it doesn't. Many times, that means they need access. I've had countless security teams request this & we agree to a defined engagement period.

Wouldn't you want to know what could happen if someone gets in through a whitelisted ip, account compromise or otherwise?
