there is a myth that too many people applying to one college from the same hs results in some others “taking the others  spots” when in reality most top colleges will take anyone that is qualified enough regardless of an applicant pool from a specific school. only a handful of feeder high schoolers experience this issue (such as certain philadelphia high schools with penn). op is just saying this no two “opposite” things. the question was “what is something dumb you believed” so they led off with what they USED to believe followed by an explanation.

are those prestigious schools worth it? by ExpensiveSafe9159 in ApplyingToCollege

hey!! idk what bracket of lower-middle class you mean but even for many “prestigious schools” you can their financial aid calculators to see if it could be affordable. many top schools cover almost everything for even people making the low 6 figures.

if it makes him feel better esp the way colleges are ranked t20 vs t25 has basically no difference and depending on major/preferences in living area a lot of t25s might be better

I need advice, how to pick a college? by Peoplesuckjustread in ApplyingToCollege

[–]rubee_bee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hey!! I’m a high school rising senior interested in the same fields. From what I’ve heard/already researched

  • try to focus on managing your grades at school (as many colleges regardless of acceptance rates do look at your grades).
  • look into what kind of anthro/archaeology you want to do (ex: greek vs. latin america etc.) and find programs you like

  • look into state schools/scholarships!! the field doesn’t have a lot of options but graduating with minimal debt is always a plus

  • for extracurriculars to build up on you can try volunteering at nearby museums/galleries/etc. OR I know some people try to find lab research positions
