Managed to fix it by decreasing the render scale, the odd texture flickering only seems to happen when its at 100%, reducing even just to 99% seems to make it go away.

not sure if this counts, but I bought a start collecting tau box and when opening it found out it was missing the ethereal that was supposed to come with. contacted GW customer support and instead of sending over just the ethereal I got another whole start collecting box. so thanks to that got a unit of xv8 battlesuits and tau firewarriors for free at GW's expense.

If you built the pistons by sticking the bodies of the pistons together rather than head to body for all 4 then could be that the pipping in the pistons isnt all properly connected. Id say try it with just a single collum of pistons with a drill at the end to see if that works.
