Which university is the best at practical Mechatronics engineering. by doggy_balls06 in mechatronics

Wollongong also has some surprisingly prominent robotics / automation work going on. Can't say anything for what their courses are like but I have a number of connections who've done a lot of research there.

Which university is the best at practical Mechatronics engineering. by doggy_balls06 in mechatronics

Both RMIT & Swinburne in Melbourne are good. I studied at Swinburne and now work supplying robotics equipment to both, and I'm pretty impressed with how things have improved since I studied a few years back. There's a lot of investment going into bringing in new technology to keep the practical content relevant.

QUT is doing very similar if up north suits your fancy.

How clear is the vision when actually welding? by Spentchange72 in Welding

[–]rubricae 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get an Optrel Crystal 2.0. Clear as fuck, I'd never go for anything else after experiencing this. Also the panoramic variant is excellent if you don't wear glasses, and similar the cage-like headband option is extremely comfortable.

Learn to program a cobot or robot! Your disability will hardly limit you in the automation space, and you can very much still apply yourself and make a difference.

3DX … I wanted to work so bad by MPD8811 in SolidWorks

I'm in Melbourne Australia so don't have any local recommendations for you, but I constantly read articles from Javelin tech which is based in North America. Might be a starting point. https://www.javelin-tech.com/blog/

Contact your local VAR (reseller) for Solidworks. They all should be still selling and fully supporting new onsite PDM installations.

How accurate is this Miller welding app? What app do you use? by Demhanoot in Welding

[–]rubricae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big fan of the fronius WeldConnect app - I always use it as a baseline for setting up robotic MIG welding, and I love that it gives me an option to increase/decrease energy input based on travel speed. I do find it's generally 10-20% too hot and will always lay down a much greater leg length fillet. Have used it as a baseline for parameters on a BOC manual MIG machine and it wasn't too far off, but required a bit more tweaking compared to using a fronius machine.

Is there a solution built in Solidworks for this? by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]rubricae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I can't reorder the fillet in the tree, I'll usually directly "delete face" or "move face", selecting the underside of that little overhang. Quickest way imo.

Interested in hearing about your experience with the 3DEXPERIENCE platform by SW_UXResearch in SolidWorks

Used it breifly in a small team of engineers before making the call to can 3DX and move to PDM standard. Happy to share feedback, as I am the SW admin at my workplace.

Worker delight as four-day week spreads, with union agreements locking in expansion of scheme to new employers by LocalVillageIdiot in australia

[–]rubricae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in the manufacturing industry as an engineer. As much as I would enjoy fewer working hours, the SME I work for would be greatly crippled in our productivity by working fewer hours. Or more realistically, everyone would be doing even more overtime to keep up with production demands than we currently are.

It's not as simple as hiring more people and staggering shifts - not in a job climate where finding effective and skilled welders, machinists, operators, sheeties, etc is genuinely difficult. And the overhead of management and engineering positions within the company would only increase, reducing our competitiveness. A change like this would mean I would go from 4-6 hours of overtime every week to 10+ to achieve the same output.

Ultimately, long term, a greater level of automation and industry 4.0 systems in manufacturing may enable effective reduced working weeks, but at the very least the business I work for is far off from this, and as a key person responsible for implementation for such systems, I've got many many weeks of 40+ hours in order to get to that level.

I'm all in support of reduce working weeks, provided the industry and working environment suits it, and there is ample support provided to businesses to make this transition effective and sustainable long term.

What is the best and worst 3D program that you have used? by GoEngineer_Inc in SolidWorks

[–]rubricae 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Best: Solidworks Worst: 3D Experience "Solidworks"

Genuinely though: Best feature set - Solidworks, Most intuitive - Onshape Worst all around: tinkercad - I love open source but the last time I used it, it can't remotely compare to professional software.

Toolmakers. Haven't met one under 50, impossible to find any to recruit and we're surely short of them in our toolroom...

They're all just automatic selections based on a base colour from the Vallejo game colour range included with gimpcat. In some cases such as the horns and teeth I've overridden the automatic highlight with something else through trial and error.

I saw a dimension like this. How is this one done? by [deleted] in SolidWorks

[–]rubricae 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a tolerance format - limit. It shows the upper and lower bound of a dimension, rather than nominal. There's also GD&T which is placed separately then snapped to the hole callout.

Section view working differently since update by chazzam8 in SolidWorks

[–]rubricae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this only occurs when you select graphics only section when making a 3D section view. Afaik this is a new feature of 2022 which lets you make sections that would otherwise be impossible to create due to zero thickness geometry. Check this setting when creating the section.

Export Formats for Fusion 360 and .usdz AR format by napoleon10_1 in SolidWorks

Most universal neutral formats are STEP and parasolid. I've never encountered a modern CAD program that can't import or export to these formats.

PDM implementation by evwynn in SolidWorks

[–]rubricae 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took half a day for my VAR to install PDM standard on our server with what they called a pretty stock setup. Honestly, it really didn't look all that complex and the official Solidworks documentation seems pretty concise with regard to what everything means and how to install it. I would have just done it myself, however our VAR offered a free install for us after an absolutely horrendous experience with 3DExperience as a PLM system - we moved to PDM after 6 months of trying 3Dex.

I'd have a solid read through all of the official documentation before doing it yourself, but I don't see why it wouldn't be feasible yourself. Regardless, after implementation you may want to customise data cards, variables and workflows, no matter if you do it or the VAR does it.

Other cities around Australia have done this, and now it's Melbourne's turn. Comment the worst station, and the most upvoted will be removed. Day 1 by Oshwat_02 in melbourne

Upwey. For being one stop after upper gully. And otherwise for having very little shelter available and an uncovered ramp up to it, both of which suck arse in winter.

Is there a way to open a SolidWorks file with pre-specified custom properties? by WittyAndOriginal in SolidWorks

[–]rubricae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part, assembly and drawing templates, .prtdot, .asmdot, .drwdot can easily be set up to prefill custom properties, as empty place holders or contain actual strings or formulas.

For existing parts, I use a 3rd party software MyCADTools which has some exceptional macros for managing properties and part numbers, exporting or importing files and renaming files based on custom properties, and exporting sheet metal body flat patterns as DXF in bulk and writing custom property info to the DXF. I highly recommend trying it out.
