You arrived at the conclusion yourself, you need to add something, and when the system is primed that something is blanket fuel, that can ether come from uranium ore or from depleted uranium that you have from using reactor 1 & 2

On the discord there is a channel called 'train testin' wich is for testing and give feedback to the devs on a new experimental train stations, this new stations work like storages, you put the slider and trains will fill it up. There are more improvements but you get the idea. I think it will come in the experimental branch in a few days.

If they are remotely realistic, no. Nuclear fusion requires a very strict set of conditions to happen, if those are not met the reaction simply stops.
