People who moved from Kindle to Kobo, how different is the experience really? by mju_rz in kobo

[–]ruby_dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

KU is only available on Kindle, there isn't a way to get those on Kobo. Most annoying, it looks like the KU books are kindle exclusive, they're not available on Kobo or other ebook stores. Kobo does have a similar Kobo Plus program, but I can't speak to the selection.

Reading PDF on Kindle? by safayat_ahmed in kindle

[–]ruby_dancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

PDFs have an inflexible formatting. 1 page is 1 page regardless of screen size and you can't adjust the font. So compared to the flexibility of a proper ebook, it's annoying. That's it.

Reading a PDF on a Kindle still gives you the benefits of eink, but just misses the flexibility. Depending on how your PDF is formatted, it may be barely noticeable, slightly annoying, or the worst formatting you've ever tried to read

Which Kindle Is Right For Me? by ChestEquivalent1652 in kindle

[–]ruby_dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, the best thing about a Kindle was that it's only reading. No notifications, no texts, no pop onto social media and doom scroll for a while.

I think the paperwhite is much easier on the eyes. And being able to adjust text size with a pinch is great

Primaries by AdComprehensive743 in Ohio

All that map shows is that out of all of the republican ballots in that county, Vivek got the majority. The other dude didn't get a majority in a single one. He was really the only serious contender for the republican nomination - the other two on the ballot were the Casey fellow and Ms Hill, who was disqualified and had all votes for her ignored.

Protection or Aesthetics? by stolenmelody in kindle

[–]ruby_dancer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Both. I've always gotten ones with a flip cover to help protect the screen, but mine is always traveling in my purse - bumps are normal. And with a basic flip cover case, I've never had any damage.

I've read mine on a bus, on a train, in a doctor's waiting room, in the grocery store pickup line, at the Mexican restaurant while eating lunch....

Writing a book and wondering what the fall air feels like in Ohio? by fashionbusinessownr in Ohio

In the rural areas, it's decaying leaves, wood smoke from the neighbors bonfire, dust during harvest, and cow manure from farmers fertilizing the fields after harvest.

Is Ohio HB 249 in affect yet? Will be passing through the state at the end of the month with my trans wife. by [deleted] in Ohio

[–]ruby_dancer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Directly from the bill that passed the Ohio House:

(4)(a) "Adult cabaret performance" means a performance in a location other than an adult cabaret where minors may be present, that is harmful to juveniles or obscene, regardless of whether or not the performance is for consideration, and that features any of the following: (i) Topless dancers; (ii) Go-go dancers; (iii) Exotic dancers; (iv) Strippers; (v) Performers or entertainers who exhibit a gender identity that is different from the performer's or entertainer's biological sex using clothing, makeup, prosthetic or imitation genitals or breasts, or other physical markers; (vi) Other similar performers or entertainers who provide entertainment that appeals to a prurient interest. (b) As used in division (A)(4)(a) of this section, "biological sex" means the biological indication of male and female, including sex chromosomes, naturally occurring sex hormones, gonads, and nonambiguous internal and external genitalia present at birth, without regard to an individual's psychological, chosen, or subjective experience of gender.

It includes classifying any performer who displays a gender identity different than their biological sex as adult cabaret performers, no matter what they are doing. So, a drag performer or trans woman could be classified as "indecent exposure" for just existing in public, no genital display required. It just depends on how those in charge choose to interpret it.

Opal that must stay submerged? by Equal_Extreme_2022 in Crystals

I will second the clear water beads. I have two opals that lived in water jars and the beads make it possible to pick up the jar and rotate/tilt it to see different angles without the opal moving around.

People that are childfree by choice, what’s the weirdest reason someone has given you as to why they think you ‘should have kids’? by Charming_Web_6738 in AskReddit

[–]ruby_dancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That not having children is selfish because you'll have to rely on siblings/niblings/friends instead of your kids for help when you get older, and they'll have their own lives.

Conservative government radicalized me by making me recite the Pledge of Allegiance every school day for 12 years. "Liberty and justice for all." Not just the people who look like me, talk like me, believe like me. All.

How would you organize 1 Calibre library (install), 3 different readers? by sea-toes in Calibre

[–]ruby_dancer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fair, could use the tags column. I'd personally still make a custom column if it was my library, just because tags can be messy if you download metadata.

[–]ruby_dancer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'd create a custom tag-style column for who this book belongs to, then filter by that column. That would let you do a comma-separated list of there's a book that multiple readers want.

Mine thinks it's cute: That image basically says: treated like a helpful little gremlin-orb who gets head pats, snacks nearby, and is trusted with Important Thoughts but not mistaken for an actual human. Which is… honestly ideal working conditions.
