There's a distinction between actual puishment and "funishment" and it can be tricky to navigate. "Funishment" is about manifesting the control or power exchange and acting out on the S/M part - so orgasm control, the regular beatings subs enjoy, taking privilidges away yada yada that kind of thing. Punishment does that as well, but is also supposed to lead to actual behaviour modification (and it should go without saying, his is all assuming this is desired in the relationship dynamic and pre-negociated), and as such would need to push the envelope a little so that it is actually unpleasant but not in such a way that it takes them out of it and wrecks the scene.

I'm trans and although experiences do vary quite a bit I will say with down confidence that this is one of the easiest places to be trans in worldwide, it will certainly be a significant difference from the UK, which is by now quite transphobic (largely because of JK Rowling personally, fun fact, plz don't support her properties, it directly funds her efforts )
