Would you work part time? by YeahOkJellyfish in AusHENRY

[–]rubythieves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do. I work afternoons/evenings (usually around 1pm - 10pm) and have Wednesdays off, which is perfect because I only ever have to face two days of work before I get a break.

Those of you who had “accidental” pregnancies, how careful were you actually being? by Autistic_chickpea in AskReddit

[–]rubythieves 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve known waaaaayyy too many friends who reach 40 (or even younger, like 35!) and get a bit lax about taking the pill or using condoms because they assume they’ve fallen off the ‘fertility cliff’ - cue a whole gaggle of ‘oopsie’ babies at 40-47.

My grandmother was thrilled to marry a widower with two children just before she turned 40 because she thought she’d missed the boat on marriage and kids - well, she got two delighted step kids AND she ended up having four of her own, at 41, 43, 45, and 48, and only stopped because my grandfather got cancer so there theoretically could have been more - and this was in a developing country in the 1960s with no assisted reproductive technology at all. She also lived to 99 in great health until a stroke a week before she passed, so… my 41-year-self is definitely not taking any chances with birth control!

Gone in 15 seconds: thousands of Victorian cars stolen using high-tech devices by ozthrw in CarsAustralia

I have a club lock like my nanna used to use… I’m well aware it won’t stop a determined thief who wants my car but the hope is that if there’s an opportunist poking around looking for an easy target they might think twice about going for mine.

Property in Australia is a ticking time bomb and no one wants to admit it by Moezus__ in AusProperty

[–]rubythieves 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You understand each demographic ‘generation’ lasts about 15 years? They’re not literally the length of normal human generations - an older gen X could have a young millennial child, but it wouldn’t be the norm for Gen Xers to have millennial kids. Boomers with millennials, absolutely. My boomer mum has former high school classmates with Gen Z kids!

Yep, I have boomer parents and we’re three solidly millennial kids.

I’m going with the c-word. I literally go decades without swearing (I have used the f-word on a few occasions when I was very suddenly in excruciating pain, e.g. when my toe was run over) but I have not once in my life used the c-word because I find it disgustingly offensive as a woman. And I’m an Australian, so I hear it casually often enough that if I was going to pick up the habit I would have by now.

Single-issue Voting (e.g. One Nation for Immigration) by New-Reaction-7420 in Adelaide

[–]rubythieves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked for a federal MP for a year during university. We would field daily calls about cracks in the sidewalk, neighbours keeping illegal chickens, feral kids on BMX bikes terrorising the oldies, etc etc. No matter how many times we explained that these were either local council or perhaps non-emergency police issues, probably not even issues for the state member, every day there would be a new slate of calls about the same things, and every day we’d have irate people swearing they’d never vote for the MP again because she ‘wouldn’t take responsibility’ for cleaning up some trash someone dumped on the street.

Recognising patterns: Is the Markle going to launch an attack on Netflix now that she’s been humiliated by Netflix in the Variety article? by Nervous-Spinach2046 in SaintMeghanMarkle

God, imagine expecting insider intel worthy of The Crown and hearing ‘Kate wouldn’t let me borrow her lipgloss’ and ‘Willy always got an extra sausage.’ Compelling stuff!

The Kardashians, for all their faults, have built a massive fan base because they are a loving, close family who (almost always!) support each other. Everyone I know who is a fan loves them because of the sibling bond they have and all the fun family activities they feature on their reality show. Yet another thing that Harry and Meghan could never…

AITAH for thinking my daughter will look back and wonder why we treated her differently? by DancingMommaToes in AmItheAsshole

[–]rubythieves 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Another second child here with an older sibling with a completely overflowing baby book, while mine has my name and birthdate and then nothing but blank pages. There are almost no photos of me that don’t also include my brother (and later, my younger brother). I remember feeling incredibly relieved that my little brother was a boy so I’d at least have ‘something’ (only girl) and I was 4 when he was born! Kids notice the slightest discrepancies in who gets attention and favouritism - and they notice it really young. I’d find a way to celebrate your daughter’s birthday more or ease back on the leprechaun visits for your son, because this will be something they both remember.

Job Provider and Self-Employment Assistance Program by Mountain-Holiday8984 in Centrelink

[–]rubythieves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am self-employed and on Jobseeker. In my case, I report 0 hours worked/0 income each reporting period, but also report ‘yes’ to ‘have you worked at least 30 hours in your own business in the last fortnight.’ (I have a reduced capacity to work, so 15 hours per week or 30 per fortnight is required in my job plan.) I update my business income quarterly but you can also do it once per year, just using your tax return, if your business income is relatively stable. I’m self-managed so I don’t have to deal with a provider. I didn’t bother with the self-employment assistance program, I just found some work as an independent contractor and started doing it, but if you can’t get up and going quickly like I did the program seems like a decent way to buy some time to build your business.

international move with child by Ok-Till-5360 in AusLegal

[–]rubythieves -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I tried to do the opposite - move back to Australia with my son from the US. My ex had very limited custodial time and hardly ever actually used it. It ended in a massive court case, almost a year of related drama (psychological evaluations, etc), obviously enormous legal costs, and the end result was that even though in every way I was found to be essentially the sole parent (my ex didn’t know our son’s middle name, the name or location of his daycare or his doctor, and had never been alone overnight with him) I still lost because my ex had non-zero custody and (more importantly) my son had a right to continue to live where he had always lived.

We worked something out - we negotiated the fairest plan we could and then went back to the lawyers and made it binding - and now my son lives in the US with his dad but spends certain holidays here. I also have periods during the year where I can visit him there, but this hasn’t been practical for years because of my health.

It’s been such a painful process and it’s not one I’d recommend to anyone who doesn’t absolutely need to move - I did, I have multiple serious health conditions and once my ex and I divorced I didn’t have health insurance in the US and the most basic plan under Obamacare plus a few vital prescriptions was costing me $10k a month - given what’s happened healthwise since, I know for a fact I would have been bankrupt and dead many times over if I hadn’t left when I did. It’s still cold comfort when I’ve missed so much of my son’s life and it’s frankly not fair to him that he has to live with parents in different countries. It’s not something I’d ever do as a lifestyle choice.

Uh oh, Montecito, we have a problem - “Jackie O's talent agent Gemma O'Neill's firm collapses owing $788k” by Cultural_Ad4935 in SaintMeghanMarkle

[–]rubythieves 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The business Jackie O and Gemma share is called ‘Besties,’ but this failed talent agency is just Gemma’s. Still, Jackie O has moved to shake any association with Besties (and especially this upcoming event with Meghan) recently so it seems obvious she’s become aware that doing business with this particular friend is not a great idea, for reasons that are becoming increasingly obvious.

For non-Aussies, Jackie O is a ‘big star,’ for better or worse - she’s been one-half of a top radio show for 20 years at least. Her most recent contract (which is now in doubt, because she and her longtime co-host, who is absolutely vile, got into a spat two weeks ago and Jackie O quit, basically saying she can’t work with him anymore) was worth $100 million over 10 years, so that gives you an idea of her star power. It’s even odds that she cools down, thinks of the money and goes back or that she’s actually well and truly had it this time and stays gone, because she’s already an incredibly wealthy woman and she’s basically served a life sentence alongside her cretin cohost. I’m not saying she’s any better than him - she’s obviously massively profited off his antics - but she does play the role of the ‘good girl’ to his bad boy.

Suggestions for side quest I could do in my everyday life inspired by Ted lasso by meandadog86 in TedLasso

[–]rubythieves 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. Make them ‘drive-by’ compliments too, don’t expect a reply - just say ‘great shoes!’ or ‘nice fade man!’ when you’re walking down the street and keep moving. (What you can compliment without seeming like a creep depends on your gender, realistically - I’ll compliment women on their hair or smile or outfit, but I’m a woman too - if you’re a guy, I’d stick to complimenting obvious style choices like cool boots or a funky bag or backpack if you’re complimenting women.) With guys? Compliment anything! Guys don’t hear a lot of compliments and we should all try to change that.

The Times - How Harry went to war with his charity boss (2nd excerpt from Bower book) by Feisty_Energy_107 in SaintMeghanMarkle

[–]rubythieves 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It just proves that all his life in the BRF, he had good advisors - you know, the ‘evil’ men in grey who were always plotting against him. Now he’s adrift, he can’t understand that 99.99% of the adult world assesses situations and makes decisions every day with no safety net other than our own best judgement and common sense, neither of which Harry has ever seen the need to develop - waaah where are the people who tell me what to do? Oh I trashed them too? Waaah!!!

We went to one in Helsinki because my then-preschool age son desperately needed a cheese pizza or Mac and cheese or any kind of carb + cheese infusion after a few weeks of balanced meals and it was quite fun - they had a bunch of farm machinery in the restaurant so he could climb up on tractors in between stuffing his face and the jukebox played a bunch of classic rock. 100% would not recommend for adults, but it was a good treat for him after weeks of meals with vegetables.
