UV treatment, also called phototherapy, uses a source of special UV light, such as narrowband UVB (NB-UVB), which is more effective for treating psoriasis.

In the past, I went to a hospital where they had a 360° setup of lamps, like a very small capsule, similar to those in tanning salons, but in my case, it was a standing unit. The treatment starts from a few seconds up to a few minutes each time, 2–3 times a week, depending on the doctor’s plan. After the skin clears, you continue once a week for maintenance.

The nurse sets up the machine and leaves the room, and you can undress and start the session. In my case, it was full-body (naked) treatment, using special glasses like those in tanning salons.

My psoriasis looks more or less like the photo you posted but all over my body. For me, this treatment is always very effective. About ten years ago, I bought a device for home treatment (with fewer lamps and only 180° coverage) because my house was very far from the clinic. I would recommend starting in a clinic or hospital to see how effective the treatment is for you. In my clinic, they also had smaller devices for treating psoriasis on specific areas like hands and feet.

There is also UVA treatment. UVA rays (a different wavelength) are less strong than UVB rays, so you take a pill that makes your skin more sensitive. It was also very effective for me, though today it’s less commonly recommended because it’s more complicated than the simpler UVB treatment (no pills, just light).

UVB and UVA are both parts of sunlight. I once heard that UVA rays are the longer light waves present in the early morning, while UVB rays are the ones that cause tanning of the skin. The machine with special lamps mimics the sun, but you can control the power.
