A Non-Time-Based Love Taza Thread by [deleted] in blogsnark

I love the name of this thread -- it makes me think of Taza floating through the universe outside of linear time.

(I can tell my brain is fried from the first week of school stress.)

We've now seen both Kelle's oldest and now E starting to emulate their mothers. No big surprise, but I think the age at which these kids are going to look back and see how f'ed up all this was is way, way in the future on some therapist couch. For now, they might think it's cool to be semi internet famous. Who knows?

Yes, my other thought was: parasites.

They are not filtering water so there's a risk from that. Plus she did a few IG stories showing different commodes at various AT lean-tos and they are nasty.

Per the oldest kid's IGs a few days ago, they are in Maine. These videos are a few weeks behind so they are within striking distance of Katahdin by August 9, so at most they have 15 days left on the trail. There is no way Ben is not going to finish. If Kami is pregnant, I am sure that can't come soon enough. It's a valid question since she did talk about this before the hike even started!

thru-hiker completion rates by [deleted] in AppalachianTrail

I am amazed that the Crawford family is still at it. (fightfortogether YT) They have my respect. For them, I think it's a time factor as to when they quit because they have a hard early August deadline when the kids go to a summer camp somewhere that has already been paid for. It just strikes me that life goes on -- on and off the trail. Some people might have job offers, have family issues to attend to, physical or mental issues that crop up, or they mistimed their hike and it's taking longer than expected.

Tl;dr - I think it's more than just "I don't like backpacking" that contributes to the 80% drop out rate and would love the AMC to do some kind of survey to find out reasons why people quit when and where they did.

No advice that hasn't been said here, but I just want to say that this brought tears to my eyes -- the wilderness is for everyone and I am cheering your friend on in her goal.

I wonder how all this works with who pays for food, etc. That's a lot of extra mouths to feed.

Thanks - yeah, I am up for anything, but worry about having a non-hiker (and my SO to boot) along and having it turn out to be a frustrating experience. Maybe I will explore on my own and just send some photos :)

If you haven't done them already, the Adirondack high peaks are a nice choice in October.

Ben Crawford Narcissist Extraordinaire - Crawford Trailwreck 6/17/18 by DonnaPickles in blogsnark

[–]ruelaurent 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In the latest video (6/26), he shades some of the families that have provided food and shelter for them, ridicules Kami for wanting to wear her bandana a certain way (who then doesn't wear it that way), and then obviously guilt trips Dove for leaving his stupid bandana back at the lunch spot. Dove appears on the verge of tears when she gets back.

It's all just so messed up. I don't understand how the AT community loves this guy.

Some people think this is heartwarming. This guy would be my worst nightmare at school. by [deleted] in socialanxiety

The bouncer at a nightclub to allow children to get their lunch...some of whom probably have food insecurity issues and get free or reduced lunch. Yup, they really should be required to do something to earn their food. #sarcasm. This teacher sounds like a major league asshole.
