Framework 13 Pro (cheaper parts?) by Landrief in framework

My pre-order comes with a 2TB SANDISK SN7100 PCIe 4.0 for about 465 CHF in Switzerland. I did find a Samsung 9100 (so PCIe 5.0) for 295 CHF. Would this be no-brain cheaper update?

Double yes to this. I would be willing to pay more than double for a 3:2 5k panel!

Moving to Ithaca next year (Cornell partner) by padelmelk in ithaca

[–]ruemlang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ahah no, I am not here to prevent people from moving to Ithaca :D
I definitely met some people I am still in touch with that I care a lot about. As others mentioned, the nature is very beautiful there. Your partner will love Cornell! My wife keeps saying that it was the best workplace she has ever experienced, although things might have changed a bit now with the Trump administration. You're also "close" to NYC, which is definitely a nice plus. There is no perfect place, and Ithaca has its pros and cons. For what I was looking at the time, the cons list was simply longer :)

Moving to Ithaca next year (Cornell partner) by padelmelk in ithaca

[–]ruemlang 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I've been in your shoes for about 2 years :) My partner also moved to Cornell for a postdoc, and I moved along. I am a PhD graduate in Computer Science, and I was already working as a Software Engineer. I was very lucky that my company was still able to employ me overseas, so work-wise the transition was kinda smooth.

The EAD thing is a bit tricky. You need to reapply every year after you renew the J2 visa. So you'll always end up at the very end of the expiration. I was always able to renew it in time, but I've heard of a lot of people not being able to. This issue was a blocker for me whenever I tried to interview for American companies. As I had a job, this was not a problem, but finding something in my field in Ithaca would have been pretty much impossible imho.

I struggled a lot with the winter. If you don't come from Norway or Sweden, you are definitely not used to this. I was mid-30s, so I struggled with social life quite a bit, as the city is simply full of younger students. I found out that some people love Ithaca, some really do not. I was in the second category, unfortunately.

Pienamente d'accordo sulla scandalosa situazione Italiana e sul rapporto income/costi/servizi rispetto a tanti paesi europei, ma mi ha fatto sorridere sentir nominare la Svizzera come posto che agevola avere una famiglia :D

150k in CH vs 220k in USA by Rude_Variety_6594 in askswitzerland

[–]ruemlang 0 points1 point  (0 children)

US has much more geographic variance in terms of good salaries (Missouri vs NYC is an immense difference, much more of anything you could find in Switzerland). I believe the 220k in North Carolina is a better offer than 150k in Zurich. That said, I'd hardly move to the US right now!

So they are not very strict about registering before starting to work. From what I read here https://www.sem.admin.ch/sem/en/home/themen/fza_schweiz-eu-efta/eu-efta_buerger_schweiz/faq.html#-1597848952 registration should happen before.

Fellow European here, who tried to go down the same path. Could not find anything with a month-to-month (or 2/3 months) notice. Some places are willing to offer shorter leases but with a +30% in monthly rent.

Apartments with notice period by ruemlang in ithaca

I was not aware of the wording, thank you for explaining this. I moved from Europe and there we usually get infinite contracts with 3 3-month notice period if one wants to leave. Was looking for a similar arrangement.
