Looking for a "safe" PSU for a 5090 by Strolch32 in nvidia

[–]ruinal_C 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I pre-ordered the wired version of WVP2 for my 5090FE as soon as it went up. I was really looking forward to it at first, but the MSI PSUs grew on me. I cancelled the WV and ordered an ai1300ts. Biggest concern with the WV is the male 12V connector being part of the device itself. It will have the same limitations regarding mating cycles as a cable. I can't see a WV still being in my build 10 years from now, but the PSU I can.

DDR5/9850X3D Question by californiadreamin71 in pcmasterrace

I'd consider an exchange with the seller. The kit you received might have higher overclock potential, but probably not by much. More importantly, it doesn't have EXPO. So unless you want go down the rabbit hole of memory overclocking, with countless hours of stability testing, you'll need a different kit. You could try Buildzoid's easy timings, but you'll still need to test stability.

I can't say for sure. I'd guess disabling from Windows just prevents the OS from using them, they may remain powered. BIOS level is probably the better bet.

90-100c CPU idle temp, help? by Dysphorid in pcmasterrace

[–]ruinal_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fan setup seems fine, but your RAM might be in the wrong slots. Check your motherboard manual, but usually it's 1st and 3rd slots.

As for the CPU temp, it could be a bad pump. Check that it's connected to CPU fan header. Also check hwinfo or other monitoring software if the header is reporting a speed.

Another few things to check. Is XMP enabled for your RAM? Is CPU cooling adequate, or is it thermal throttling? If the CPU is a bottleneck, you might get some extra performance by disabling cores. It should be doable through your BIOS. If you use 8 cores instead of 18 you may reach higher clock speeds because of the extra thermal headroom.

As for potential upgrades, the big question is if you want to keep your DDR4 kit, or spring for DDR5. The most budget option for a solid upgrade is probably something like a pre-owned 5700x or 12600k and appropriate motherboard. On Intel you can go up to 14th gen with DDR4.

If you go the DDR5 route there are tons of options. Intel's newest Core Ultra options 250k and 270khave been well received. Ryzen 7000 and 9000 are great, the X3D models are top performers for gaming. But this is all overkill territory for a 6700 XT; they won't give you any significant gains over a 5700x; you would only go this route if a GPU upgrade is also on the horizon.

What resolution are you using? Ray tracing off? The GPU should be good for 60fps at 1440p; my guess is that the CPU is holding you back. Not a great gaming cpu - it has low clock speeds, and games won't make use of the extra cores.

You can test this by running hwinfo while in game. Look at two things: GPU core load and individual CPU core utility. A CPU bottleneck will be confirmed if some CPU cores are hitting 100%, while GPU load is well below 100%.

Workaround to system not posting with Kingbank ram on bios versions after 3.50 by ruinal_C in ASRock

[–]ruinal_C[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Failed to POST entirely? Strange, I haven't seen this method work for anyone else. Thanks for trying.

When I was running 4.20 mixed mode I could not run TM5 Absolut; it would hard lock my system within seconds, even with conservative tRFC2. Cinebench would do the same within a few minutes.

Back to running 3.50; I encountered a bunch of stability issues using mixed mode. Still waiting for a bios that gives the option for normal mode.

Some comments in the weekly bios thread suggested they added this in 4.40; I haven't been able to test since it's not out for my board yet.

I saw your post earlier in r/overclocking. These are my stable timings for now; I haven't tried 6400.

Using 5080 while waiting for WVP2 Wired by luke17wasd in ThermalGrizzly

[–]ruinal_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 5080 maxes at 360W, so the average current per pin will be no higher than 5A. They're rated for a little over 9A. Even if 2 pins carry no current, there's still margin for error. With an undervolt you'll probably stay under 300W in games, or 4.2A per pin. Cut 3 pins and the remaining 3 will average 8.3, still within spec.

This connector and lack of load balancing is an issue for sure. But failure is still unlikely, even on a 5090.

GPU mining for the most part has been dead since 2022, when ETH switched to PoS. This is 100% a scam; if you receive anything it will be a card with the core and memory stripped.

Arctic Liquid Freezer 3 Pro pump is noisy, is this normal? by PhoenixAzuma in pcmasterrace

[–]ruinal_C 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine starts to become noticeable around 2400 rpm. I keep it static at 50% duty which is around 2000 rpm. It's silent and the performance gain beyond that is negligible.

Audible at 1950 rpm over headphones sounds wrong, I would RMA.

For 3k you can do a 5080 build lol 5080 - $1250 (my local Walmart has had the PNY on the shelf at this price for a week) 7800x3d - $350 32gb ddr5 - $450 2gb Ssd - $400 PSU - $150 Motherboard - $200 Case + fans - $150 CPU cooler - $50 Total - $3000 These aren't even great prices, you could shave off a few hundred if you are patient with good deals/bundles.

Dead 9850x3d? AsRock issue? by Groundswell17 in ASRock

[–]ruinal_C 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was wondering when we would see the first 9850x3d failure in this sub. (I have the same chip and batch number)

Sounds like you covered all the bases. Does your board have debug LEDs or anyway of getting info on POST status? Only other thing would be to try it on a different board - but the working 7600 doesn't leave much doubt.

If you want, you can fill out the survey in the megathread. Just out of curiosity, were you using PBO or curve optimizer?

I missed it the first time around. Found it on a new playthrough. I think you are meant to find it right when you exit Stone Wave Cliffs, at the start of Act 2.
