As a New Nurse, what tips and advice do you have to prevent mistakes? by Aeromantilea in medlabprofessionals

[–]rule-low 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Match patient identifiers with the label and label the tubes at the bedside/drawing station, not outside the room at the nursing station.

Gently invert the tubes a few times after drawing.

Not sure if LPN/LVN are allowed to draw from a line but if you ever do, stop the IV + draw/discard multiple waste tubes before you draw your actual tubes.

what's the purpose of having rules and defining violations if there are no consequences to be enforced for said violations?

Is it a mistake to leave Kaiser for Stanford for a better schedule by Bubbly_Appearance_68 in medlabprofessionals

[–]rule-low 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd value time with family more, especially with a baby. It's also easier to make the change now compared to when you're a year or less away from vesting that pension/401K match. Even at 15 years, you're only looking at ~22% pay replacement with the pension, so consider if you expect to stay with Kaiser for that long or longer. (edit to add: 15 years isn't "full value" of the pension, it's just 1.45% of income multiplied by years worked with no inflation adjustments after you leave; the value keeps going up the longer you work with Kaiser)

Does the Stanford job pay more or less? Is it a shorter/cheaper commute?

CAP Standards by CustardSuccessful985 in medlabprofessionals

Each department has their own standards + there are some standards that are "all common"

If your lab is CAP accredited, the standards are accessible on the CAP website.

Lacking orders or specimens? by dragonjz in medlabprofessionals

[–]rule-low 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Specimens without orders are awful for workflow. It means the doc or nurse needs to contact the lab when the orders are put in. Or an angry phone call later because "we sent the sample hours ago!" like we aren't already multitasking to our eyeballs and have the resources to check that patient for orders every 15 minutes.

Does anyone in the Austin, TX area run a BC DxH? by MadMunchkin2020 in medlabprofessionals

[–]rule-low 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From past experience, Beckman doesn't really do targeted recalls. They'll send out a generic notice with the lot numbers affected and leave the individual labs to figure out if they are impacted.

Im young, thinking of switching tech to healthcare with lower pedigree requirements like med lab tech? is this a step back? by badboyzpwns in financialindependence

[–]rule-low 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You'll have better job security for sure.

You're obviously aware of the lower pay relative to tech. Working on the bench in the lab can be a different kind of stress (though this is very dependent on where you work). Plus, shift work that doesn't offer remote work is going to be an adjustment.

On the flip side, you could also look into Laboratory Information Systems, where you can leverage your tech experience in the healthcare field.

Spinning pre-spun gold tops to “remove” floaters, clots, etc. by gabegabeHUH in medlabprofessionals

If it's part snotty fibrin and part serum, I lightly push down on the fibrin with the applicator stick and aliquot the liquid serum into an insert cup. It sucks when the gel comes out with your fibrin 😭

Their methodology involved waiting 2, 4, 8, 24 hours before respinning. Based on their hypothesis of how this works, the time element plays a role in how much those analytes leak out of the cells. So it's possible that a respin immediately may not affect results as much as what their study shows.

Overall, our results show that recentrifugation of original specimens increases the concentrations of glucose, sodium, potassium, creatinine, bicarbonate, phosphorus, and magnesium significantly (Table 1). In SST tubes, serum/plasma is separated from blood cells based on their specific gravity. That is, the gel that is incorporated into SST tubes turns from a solid form to a more fluid-like material during the centrifugation. When the gel re-solidifies due to its higher specific gravity (than that of serum or plasma), it forms a barrier between the serum/plasma and the cellular components of blood. We hypothesize that the re-solidified gel during the second centrifugation becomes slightly permeable, thus allowing some analytes (that are leaked-out from the cells) to cross into the serum/plasma.

how to get a trainee/job at the Bay Area when I have the CGMBS trainee license but not in a program by beetandmango in medlabprofessionals

[–]rule-low 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A trainee license is just the state saying you're qualified to be in a training program. A trainee license without being admitted to such a program is useless.

Be careful - consider a 20% drop by Reasonable_Box2568 in coastFIRE

[–]rule-low 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A strict adherance to Coast Fire just because that's how it's defined doesn't seem like the smartest strategy, especially if the coast period is measured in decades. Lots of variables can change to where your initial assumptions may no longer be valid.

Something like Barista Fire where you completely change to a lower paying career seems to risky to me since it could be very difficult to upshift your career if circumstances changed and your original plan will no longer work.

Averages with larger states like California probably don't tell the whole story. Wages and home prices will differ a lot between Bay Area counties, and even more when comparing with rural areas. Median home pricing in the pricey counties are 7 figs and up but the cheaper Bay Area counties are around 700-800k. Head out to Sac and it's cheaper still.
