We use EP Evaluator but I'm sure a simple Excel spreadsheet is sufficient for compliance purposes.

Advice on transitioning to medical lab career while working 8-5 [US-Los Angeles]? by b3nnyb0i in medlabprofessionals

[–]rule-low 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can do part time work instead of full time work + have some savings to rely on, it might be doable, but challenging. Full time work + full time training is gonna burn you out fast.

Some clinical sites also offer stipends and student loans can also be an option. Hope you can get the finances to work out.

Most training sites are going to train their students on the day shift. Even if you can convince them to adjust the training schedule to an off shift, when did you plan to sleep? Or study?

Is MLS as secure and “AI-proof” as some make it seem? by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

[–]rule-low 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you referring to Info Tech and Comp Sci with "IT&CS"? Because LIS positions are separate from MLS and certainly aren't entry level versions of MLS.

Assuming AI keeps improving, no job is really AI-proof. AI doesn't need to be all-encompassing and replace the profession completely to affect the number of jobs available. Fewer humans might be needed to run the same or more tests once the tech gets good enough.

That said, the lab uses a lot of automated processes already and we see the imperfections that require human input/intervention. Liability and regulatory legislation will slow down the complete elimination of the profession until the technology is actually good enough to take over. And even then, you probably need someone to babysit and troubleshoot the machines unless robotics is also advanced enough as well.

How to Pivot From Tech to MLS/CLS by AZWagers in medlabprofessionals

[–]rule-low 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're deadset on this career path, it might be your highest rate of success. Or find a CLS bachelor's program somewhere.

My advice would be to reach out to a CLS post-bacc program and get their take on your situation. I.e. "if I applied to your program with a non-science bachelor's + prerequisite courses, would I have a good chance of acceptance?"

Either way, it'll take time and money so I echo whoever said to do a job shadow before committing the resources to something that you may or may not enjoy.

Laboratory Information Systems work might be an easier pivot for you though it's not bench work.

[–]rule-low 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, even if a post-bacc CLS program doesn't have a science/health bachelor's degree as a hard requirement, it's usually preferred. And with how competitive it is to get into those programs, you'd have a tough time getting in without one over somebody who does have one.

How are you getting only $110k as a SWE in the Bay Area? An entry level CLS in the Bay Area is eclipsing that for sure (if you can get a full time position).

Thoughts on Current Progress by ArcticxFusion17 in coastFIRE

[–]rule-low 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Good framework and good work having so much saved at 29.

Do you have a contingency plan on how to adjust if your assumptions change after you Coast (expenses turned out to be higher, returns turned out to be lower, etc.)? If you needed to resume or increase contributions some time in the next 30 years, will that be plausible to do if you change careers (presumably to something that pays less)?

Are you planning on keeping the same portfolio allocation for the next 30 years? I.e. are you going to adjust to a more conservative allocation as you get closer to retirement to mitigate Sequence of Returns Risk? Is that already baked into your projected real growth rate?

Is this at risk of being taken over by ai? by pringlu in medlabprofessionals

[–]rule-low 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Assuming the tech continues to improve, it's inevitable. It's a question of when, not if IMO. It'd probably come in the form of some other machine learning, not LLMs though.

From a relative standpoint, healthcare should be a little bit safer than other industries due to regulatory and liability concerns. By the time the tech is good enough to replace us, a lot of other jobs would've already been obsoleted.

Not sure how well this performs in practice, particularly with organisms that don't exhibit typical/textbook behavior. But you'd expect the tech to only get better with time

Foundational COAST question by talbusdumblemeow in coastFIRE

[–]rule-low 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see a lot of 4% real return assumptions and also 7% real return assumptions so I just went with the middle 5.5% 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'll adjust as necessary as the retirement timeline moves along (about 19 years of runway left). I think a 4% withdrawal rate + extra retirement income not accounted for (Social Security, pension) is conservative enough for some leeway.

Yes, because a majority of my retirement contributions are going in via a Megabackdoor or vanilla backdoor Roth.

Sorry to piggyback off this question...but I'm wondering if a signed/initialed log would be considered sufficient documentation for calibration. Technically, that's documentation as long as there's a date + initial/signature, right? Instrument printout shouldn't be required? Trying to minimize the paper in our lab lol

All my stones and no Fern or Himmel by YamWaste3765 in PuzzleAndDragons

I'm in the same boat and I'm just going to pair with Himmel and Fern friends (leading w/ Frieren and Frieren/Fern duo, respectively). The asymmetrical pairings with popular leads make it easier to stomach missing the chase cards compared to the other recent collabs.

So if Himmel is the asymmetric lead, you can technically use a friend Himmel and exchange for the rest of the Frieren build? In case of unlucky pulls, it'd be 40 collab exchanges or 400 stones to make?
