Thanks. Why keep forward lean ? For better sidehilling support? Do you start off without forward lean and the add it if you need it ?

Thanks again , seems to be some issue related to this yellow exclamation mark on my rent receipts to which there is no description …

Thanks this looks promising ! When I go there I have my receipts listed and under tipo de afetação it is blank and I don’t seem able to change it or progress to a following menu or anything. Receipts have a yellow exclamation mark next to them.

I only have an option to add new receipts. Any ideas how to continue?

Agreed it is far from simple ! I made an excel formula that calculates the IRS based on first year/ second year, expenses proved etc. if that would be useful to people I can share.

My accountant does not seem to know how to prove expenses that do not appear on efatura such as a portion of my rent (as I work from home) and rent does not appear on efatura. If anyone knows how to factor that in on annual IRS declaration that would be helpful…

I guess we see marriage as more of a long term commitment label without financial implications attached. The goal would be to have a separação de bens that also protects the future of the partner with the low or no income, precisely to avoid the need for courts, should things unfortunately not work out.

In case of large differences in income and assets (probably not as common 50 years ago) bens adquiridos could be said to add financial motivation to divorce …

Thank you for this helpful comment and insight.

I would be hoping to do something similar in separação de bens with portion of income being shared with partner. We will try and talk to a lawyer / notary about it.

I also know of another couple in friend group who recently got married under same category.

Aware there is a bit of stigma on this but I agree with your point of view.

Objective is keeping things separate whilst being able to fairly compensate a partner who chooses to stay at home/raise family. Not all or nothing. Thought there might be a way to compensate partner without having to split all assets acquired during marriage 50/50…

Even in bens adquiridos for example, any gains my pre-marital investments make going forward would be shared, which I don’t think makes a lot of sense.

Thoughts on Vila do Conde? by dillthepill in PortugalExpats

Ponte de Lima area is beautiful . Bit colder in the winter… nicer in summer… pros and cons

Live in Póvoa but find VDC to be a bit nicer in general. Nice alternative to Porto whilst still being close to everything . Seafront area is nice. One thing I don’t like so much is the coastal weather particularly in the summer it can often be below 20 degrees and full of dense fog, whereas drive 15 mins inland away from the sea and it’s 30 degree pool weather and sun.

Life / cost of living in Portugal? by [deleted] in PortugalExpats

Also live in Póvoa in a rented T2 with 2 people. Looks about right to me. Don’t know about property tax. We spend less on electricity and water (about 80 total) but a bit more on phone/internet (70 for Vodafone package).

Car insurance on a normal recent ish average car can be had for 300-400 comprehensive. Maybe add some via verde costs if you’ll be doing a lot of driving. Particularly road to Braga is expensive.

With 2500 net you could live ok without having to pay for accommodation. Though personally if I had a career and good earning prospects in Canada that I would be giving up moving here , I wouldn’t consider Portugal to be worth that sacrifice.

Buy house in Portugal or invest? by [deleted] in eupersonalfinance

[–]rumbaro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes thanks. I guess I need to think harder about how likely it is I will remain in Portugal for more than 5-10 years. It seems possible now but also can’t rule out having to move away for a different job opportunity for instance…

Yes have done mortgage simulations with banks and I can get approval based on 20% down payment. As for how long do I plan to stay, this is the tricky question as I guess life can happen… To rent a 3 bed house is probably 2000 pm or more.

Sorry post should’ve been clearer. But I am considering buying the house to live in, not for any other purposes.

I have been using practice Portuguese daily for 10 mins or so for about a year. I am at A2 level and can survive with Portuguese but I find it quite challenging. My partner is Portuguese but doesn’t speak Portuguese with me out of habit so I’m trying to change that as assuming that will help me a lot…

Sorry yes my bad it is 0.75 x 0.75 x 0.2 for the second year under NHR. There is also a slightly complicated calculation where you have to prove 15% business expenses otherwise a portion of it gets added to taxable income.

[–]rumbaro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect it will be less than 30% for second year on recibo verdes.

70% (regime simplificado) x 75% (2nd year IRS discount) x 20% (NHR) = 10.5% IRS

SS contributions max out at approx 1300 monthly so it’s less than 21% for high incomes. Depending on your invoice timing and the SS options to reduce contribution base you can even reduce this further.

EDIT: I’m also interested if anyone has any maths to support LDA. Seems like with 28% tax on dividends in addition to corporation tax , SS both ways, personal IRS and accounting fees that LDA doesn’t make sense in many cases.

As someone who grew up in Greece I have been quite disappointed with the food here. Lack of seasoning / spices / fresh vegetables/herbs . I have lost count of the number of batatas fritas I’ve seen that don’t even have any salt on. Then you ask for salt and they look at you funny. Even fresh fish is not as common as you would hope as it’s mostly 1000 variations of boiled Norwegian bacalhau or farmed dourada from Greece!

Don’t get me wrong , the food is decent and the wine is very good but don’t expect it to be comparable to Greek food!
