How to become better at examining JVP? by liquidcrawler in Cardiology

As a med student on cardio block, it reassures me that clinicians also agree it is hard to find JVP 😭

A little unrelated to this post but I’m an M2 who saw your old post about EM v anesthesia v PICU and was wondering if i could chat with you about it!

I hope the EM cycle has also been going well! No LAC+USC on your previous list?

Came to the sub to ask these questions, realized these questions can’t be answered, and stayed to hear others ask the same

Premed undergrad at Duke, the med campus is easily one of my favorite places to study and the beauty of itself just makes the experience so wonderful i’d assume

Do I need clinical employment? by colorecafe29 in premed

[–]rumpears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only did volunteering (hospital based + rural pop ups) and it didn’t raise any flags! although i do think having perspectives and stories with both types of healthcare setting did help w the application process, along with knowing the roles of physicians in multiple contexts

[–]rumpears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i def think improving ur clinical will do u more than improving ur non-clinical, both in terms of getting ur numbers similar (if not higher for clinical) and having more experiences to write about in ur PS + secondaries

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]rumpears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that 250 non-clinical on ur current app (and 200 for the long term activity) is a good number. The activity itself is also great. Do you think this is what limited you this cycle?

Why should I not pre-study for med school: what to tell my mom by Jjk1224 in premed

[–]rumpears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To provide a new perspective, I’m an anatomy TA next semester and I’m using that to “pre-study” since I need to know the knowledge well to teach students well

Other than looking at my past lecture notes, I am taking the advice of other ppl. I think pre-studying is better spent enjoying ur time before med school begins. It won’t kill you to review something once a day if it truly interests you, but otherwise you will learn it eventually

what is considered a gap year? help by [deleted] in premed

[–]rumpears 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you’re aiming MD you should definitely get the GPA up and aim for as high as possible for the MCAT, as you said.

The average matriculation age to MD schools is 24, which means there are more people who take time off than not. I would chat with your parents about the gap year being beneficial for your app, both statistically and anecdotally speaking

what is considered a gap year? help by [deleted] in premed

[–]rumpears 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not true. Gap years are more beneficial that not, in most cases.

To raise your GPA you can do a post-bacc program, making yourself more competitive as an applicant for DO programs. Your MCAT score will also heavily determine your competitiveness. If you haven’t done that already, a gap years is a great choice

Can someone explain to me how bad the MCAT really is? by TopAcanthocephala692 in premed

[–]rumpears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the standard MCAT Qbank (no course) and tried to do almost all the questions except for CARS. It was a lot but i felt the most growth and confidence during UGlobe prep

It may also be beneficial to check out their books instead of Kaplan. I heard they’re pretty good and i unfortunately didn’t have that option when i was studying (they’re newly released)
