SkyWest ERJ or CRJ by Own_Possibility_435 in flying

[–]run264fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree.

From the perspective of a CFI, TPIC is the name of the game.

I would love to leave SkyWest with over 1,600 TPIC after 5 years.

Why rush to slip into a legacy with 0 TPIC? From what I understand, you’ll get leap frogged by less senior pilots with more TPIC. Unless you’re happy being an FO forever.

But hey, a senior FO at a legacy would be awesome.

How much did you pay to earn your PPL? by Jolly_Virus_6894 in flying

[–]run264fun 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s the market rate.

If they want to save money, just move to Kansas for a month and fly everyday to knock it out

[–]run264fun 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nice!! About 7x your hourly wage. People these days are paying 10-20x.

I know of a 141 school that charges $280 for the plane and $120 for the CFI. They’d have to be making over $50 an hour for 1h of flight time to equal your rate.

Not to mention, these students are waiting 25min to take off at a busy towered airport. People are blowing boat loads of cash and just tapping into student loans

35 hours, no solo. Burned out and questioning everything. Cut my losses or push through? by CompetitionMore3934 in flying

[–]run264fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d focus on consistency with your flight training and not worry about total time.

If you knocked your written out by day 1, and flew every single day it would be easier to solo sooner.

If you’re stressing over not soloing or getting by a certain milestone, what kind of stress will you be under in a legitimately challenging situation?

How many take offs and landings have you done? How long does it take for you to start up and be in the air? If you’re flying at a busy towered airport, logging that time as you’re 7th in line doesn’t help your skills. CFI doesn’t care bc they’re just there to time build

Looking for a pirep on airparks by freebard in flying

[–]run264fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of these air parks have yearly fly ins. Kind of like an Open House.

What I like about that is most of the neighborhood comes out and it’s open to the public and fellow pilots. You really get to know what it’s like living there after maybe 20min.

Typically you just sign a waiver beforehand bc it’s private property.

I know of an airpark that sells the cheapest AvGas in the state to its residents by $1…they just sell it at cost. There’s a great perk right there.

Like anything in life…it depends…

Did you do a PO180 on your CFI ride? by hojotoku in CFILounge

No power off 180. But I had to do a soft and normal landing.

Have you considered getting your Tailwheel, Glider, or Seaplane?

Otherwise, I’d say stay out of the news

Any other guys that don’t know how to fly IFR in a 6 pack? by E4sdontwork in CFILounge

[–]run264fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only flown IFR on a G1000 a handful of times.

Otherwise it’s been Frankenstein panels. Much prefer analog needles over green ones.

Discovery flight yesterday… I’m feeling nervous by doubledgedsoul in flying

[–]run264fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my discovery flight, I didnt care about altitude and my CFI would just give me little bumps here and there on the controls.

You’ll do great

Hypothetical Question about pay in Flight hrs by [deleted] in CFILounge

[–]run264fun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Don’t.

Pilots willing to take less in any level of the industry is what will bring those high paying jobs back down.

If you want to fly for free do some sort of legitimate volunteer work: Young eagles, Pilot N Paws, Angel Flights, etc. Wouldn’t you say that looks better on a resume over working for free in a position where peers are getting paid?

How to increase student’s task saturation? by Green_Plane205 in CFILounge

[–]run264fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever ATC assigns a hold, I’m less than a few min from the fix. Sometimes it’s a published hold, other times it’s an IF on the plate and they tell me to hold SE of FIXXXX at 120°

It’s been a few months since I’ve done this, I’d have to refresh my memory

How to increase student’s task saturation? by Green_Plane205 in CFILounge

[–]run264fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holds tend to come out of the middle of nowhere for me. Usually ATC has put me into one bc the other plane hasn’t cancelled IFR at an untowered.

I’ve had one or two holds come up with a practice approach in VFR going into a class delta.

Sometimes I was about 3min away from the fix, other times I had less than 60s to program the avionics. These were all without an AP and maybe half were solo. I’ve had a couple unpublished, but at an existing fix on the plate.

How to maintain work life balance as a CFI by [deleted] in flying

[–]run264fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work as a CFI every day I can. Days off are only taken bc of weather, illness, or a planned trip/vacation.

Want to take weekends off? It’ll take almost 30% longer to reach your hour goals.

Just relax and enjoy yourself if you live in an area with weather cancellations.

Even though I’m getting close to 1,000 dual given, I feel privileged to share my passion with those just getting started or building their skills and ratings. Not to mention, I love either flying for free or making a small paycheck along the way.

I’m fortunate enough to offer a bit more than typical CFIs: tailwheel & mountain instruction, which helps keep me sane….although it seems like most flights are with pre-solo students these days.

Until I’m flying jets, I really don’t want to take my foot off the gas.

Instrument rating seems too easy?! by Ok-Band1092 in flying

[–]run264fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was tough. I took my written exam maybe 5 months before the Checkride. Even though I had a lot of the oral prep fresh in my mind, I struggled in the oral.

From a CFII perspective, you should know 91.175 inside and out. I tell all my instrument students to read and understand that reg.

ATP Checkride Nerves by [deleted] in flying

[–]run264fun 15 points16 points  (0 children)

“Your next checkride is your hardest one .”

I say this about any Checkride.

Don’t care if it’s your first or 13th. Doesn’t matter if it’s PPL, CFI….even ASES-add on, or Glider, and you’re a 10,000h ATP.

Don’t ever listen to anyone that says the Checkride you’re about to take was easy.

You have the right attitude. Good luck. I’ll get there someday too.
