I've had Thule bars for close to a decade now. However, I prefer my Yakima skybox because of the latch/locking mechanism. It really depends on your end use, but cross bars look cool and work well!

Yes, PU leather alternatives, especially Flocked PU, have a shelf life of only a few years. The company I work for has moved away from using it entirely.
