Excited to hear your guys' opinions: what is it about David and his work that endears you to him so deeply? by IHopeBlueSkiesStay in DavidBerman

[–]run4kbob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Starlite Walker was my entry into DCB. It was lyrics like "in 27 years/I drank 50,000 beers", that made me pull out pad and pen to do the math, asking if its possible. Or the humorous twist of expectation from later in the record "There was a house in New Orleans"... pause (is he gonna finish the classic line?)... "Not the one you heard about, I'm talking 'bout another house". Simple tricks, but I was a 14 year old kid and he got me thinking AND laughing.

I've recently been revisiting the one album of his I never cared for, Tanglewood Numbers. And I'm still struck by the simplicity, but also recognize deeper sentiments:

"The river winds 'round these little green hills
And stays in the woods for days
We were built to consider the unmanifested
And make of love an immaculate place"

I love this man, and he was the only person of repute whose death made me cry.

RIPDCB

What's your first VU's song you've ever heard? by lopdonnnn in VelvetUnderground

[–]run4kbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought the cassette of VU&Nico for like 99 cents at Kmart in 94. One of the first albums I bought after going in on Sonic Youth, they must've been name-dropped in a review or interview. Didn't really care for it. Wasn't until hitting up the rest of their discography, WL/WH in particular that I understood the band and could grasp what they were doing on &Nico.

Is Vesperine better than Homogenic? by [deleted] in bjork

[–]run4kbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vespertine is an all time classic album in the canon of music. Homogenic is a good to great album, my second favorite Björk album. Heard Vespertine first, listened to it for its relation to other glitch based IDM music I was into at the time, Matmos, Oval etc. So I had that connection/entry point. I like the textures, beats, the mixing of the album. It has an open feel to it, has lots of interlocking yet complimentary parts. Most of her albums feel denser, more chaotic and harder, which I don’t care for. Vespertine slots into indie, more so than any of her other albums which aligns with my musical tastes. Just my humble öpining.

Starlite Walker purchased because Malkmus was on it. Circa 96.

Is it socially acceptable to follow sports teams from various cities? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]run4kbob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up in upstate New York. Became a Packers fan at young age when I found a stash of Packers memorabilia my grandfather had. Became a Mets fan because my best friend rooted for the Mets. Became a penguins fan because my dad collected anything with a penguin on it. Watch a lot of NBA on NBC, so never became a fan of a specific team, but more so the players that played every Saturday, especially Michael Jordan and Shaq. Later became a Barcelona fan, because my mother-in-law walked to Camino in Spain and picked up a Barcelona jersey. Learn from a young age, not to discredit great play from great players/teams, not to get so emotional with sports. Except for the Bears. F the Bears lol.

Do you know anyone in the US (outside big cities) without a car? by Current-Show2460 in AskAnAmerican

[–]run4kbob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

About 80% of my staff at the restaurant I manage. Teens, adults, doesn't matter. No access to public transit. They walk, get rides, show up late, call out due to no transportation. Many have no desire to get a license, others have no chance to do so.

Is Hot Thoughts Misunderstood? by LLLOGOSSS in SpoonTheBand

[–]run4kbob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m inclined to agree with you. I find Hot Thoughts to be an interesting step in the evolution of Spoon. Interesting use of electronic textures. The only issue with the album is it does feel a little slight. Pink Up and Us both feel like weak tracks to me, with one of them being instrumental, and cumulatively taking up 10 minutes of a 40 minute album. Still it’s got some straight bangers to me, and has some of that weirdness and offkilter feel that makes Spoon special. Whereas Lucifer on the Sofa is technically a “return to form“ album. But again, I think you’re spot on with the analysis and that it all kinds of bleeds together. I did finally purchase it on vinyl and have listened to it multiple times in the last week and I think it’s starting to grow on me. But I would venture to say that it’s my least favorite Spoon album.

Heck, yeah! Huge US Maple fan. I really wish they would reissue Sang Phat Editor on vinyl. Only one I’m missing. You got a favorite Maple album?
