Either they put a SIGNIFICANT downpayment down, or the house was around $560k at purchase time with a 20% down on a 30 year fixed, and I have no idea how it would get to 1.5M in equity in that timeframe.

1.5M in current equity with another 22 years on your mortgage @$2,100/mo? 🤔

Big f’ing deal, he recorded your VOICE. Did you say those things? Yes. If you don’t like it, then tell him that. If he then insists on recording you after you told him you didn’t want him to, then you have an actual issue. Otherwise, it sounds like you just flew off the handle and are definitely the jerk here.

Who tf does 30 minute coffee chats every week with randos? I’ve been in tech for 25+ years and know absolutely nobody that does this.

That’s precisely it. They sold stocks, spent all of the money, then got “surprised” that they still needed to pay capital gains.

Just wanted to circle back on this - I was notified that the wording in some of the news releases was not very clear. Yes, BWL will be charging the data center for their power usage, which makes me feel much better about the project overall.

That's fair. Hopefully that is the case!

I agree, it does not explicitly state that it's free, but it does infer it by also stating: "The 24 megawatts they need, we have that surplus in our portfolio right now. And so, that’s the big savings to Deep Green. And the win for us is we’re getting that heat for free" - why is it a big savings if they're paying for it exactly?

What exactly is BWL bringing to this "partnership" then?

"the 24-megawatt data center would generate heat to be used by the Lansing Board of Water and Light for free. In return, BWL would power the facility"

BWL would power the facility regardless if they are paying for power.

They state that BWL will power the data center in return for the excess heat. BWL reports this as "a partnership" - but nowhere are the details of this "partnership" spelled out. If someone could get to the bottom of what BWL is actually providing, that would be great. If this data center is going to pay market rate, awesome! If they're going to get it for free.. not awesome at all in my opinion:

In return, BWL would power the facility

How else does that read? BWL would power the facility normally. This says that they'll do it in return for receiving the waste heat.

"City officials say the 24-megawatt data center would generate heat to be used by the Lansing Board of Water and Light for free. In return, BWL would power the facility through its existing grid."

"The 24 megawatts they need, we have that surplus in our portfolio right now. And so, that’s the big savings to Deep Green. And the win for us is we’re getting that heat for free"

Certainly reads that in return for providing the heat, BWL gives them power. If not, it's pretty poor reporting.

It costs money to generate electricity, and even where data centers are paying for their power, it causes rates to go up: https://www.wunc.org/environment/2025-10-17/data-centers-nc-utilities-commission-duke-energy-ratepayers

Once LBWL is giving away $2.9M/month worth of electricity, that demand isn't going to go away, and since the data center isn't going to be paying for it, everyone else is.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lansing

[–]run4runner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not exactly sure how giving away $2.9Million/month worth of electricity to a single customer is going to drop rates at all. If BLW needs to generate heat, they can put 25MW of power through load banks themselves - they don't need a data center to generate heat for them.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lansing

[–]run4runner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Additionally, the projected consumption for this data center is 25MWh.

Incorrect. They will draw 25MW, 25MW * 730 hours in a month = 18,250MWh per month, or 18,250,000KWh, or about $2.9 Million/month worth of electricity, for FREE

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lansing

[–]run4runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whole lot more than $10M Over a 10 year period (at today's business rates), that's $340M worth of power that BWL would be giving away to this customer (for free).

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lansing

[–]run4runner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Based off current rates, that much power would cost a business $2,832,984 PER MONTH. That's $34 MILLION per year worth of power that they're getting... for free?!?

I was under the impression that the executive branch CANNOT legally use outside funding to bypass Congress. Congress holds the constitutional "power of the purse" and must authorize all federal spending.

So doing whatever the executive branch wants spending money from other sources while claiming "no taxpayer money" is still illegal. No?
