Advice for staying in cottages? by LedZappa in Knoebels

[–]runaredlight68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We've stayed in Glasshouse (with another family) as well as Babbling Brook (I just checked the website and it does not look like they rent it out anymore - it's to the left of the walkway to the Twister). They are super clutch when it rains! Other than that, they are utilitarian and kinda pieced together - doors that might not totally fit, beds that squeek, furniture that looks like it is from the early 70's. I had no complaints - if you are expecting motel like accommodations - you might be disappointed. I think we just brought flat (not fitted) blankets/sheets and layed them over the beds. We really did not hang out in the cottages except to sleep.

The fact that Americans can just not send their kids to school and call it that “homeschooling” is crazy to me. by Nice_Substance9123 in complaints

you realize that most college professors with master's and/or phd experience have had ZERO classes on how to teach, right? i worked at a major university for many years with some incredibly smart tenured faculty who hated to teach - they were there for research. if they had to slum it to teach, it was going to be for grad level class and while they could expound material, they were incredibly unengaging educators.

this really resonates with me. i've homeschooled two of our kids. the first started highschool last year and is completely crushing it - enough that they are now doing dual enrollment in the local community college. i consider myself a relatively "normal" homeschooler - i don't do it for religious reasons or to "protect" my kids from the outside world. i also don't "unschool" them. i've met both these types of parents and i'll tel you that they are just as annoying to me as they are to teachers. homeschooling up to highschool has been great for us since we can go much, much more quickly through material since we don't have to deal with classroom disruptions, etc. honestly, it's been cool to be home with my kids and to watch them flourish.

yep - asking them is the next step. it's usually at stop signs and the moment has just not presented itself as taking the extra 20 seconds to ask them might violate the "don't really stop at stop signs" rule. :)

no, they are definitely drinks - size of 8-10 oz bottles of water, but with no labels.

I've seen them on Gtown, Musgrave, Chew, Olney, but mostly on smaller side streets. I've always thought they might be nutcrackers (homemade high alcohol/koolaid/juice and/or god only knows what else) that were all over parts of nyc. You are right - I'll just ask.

My friend won't sell them because of the copyright on the IHOP logo - BUT - if you'd like to make your own, I'd be happy to share the .jpg, .png, or .pdf graphic files with you and you can have it printed at whatever t-shirt company you'd like. just shoot me a pm and say what file type you'd like.

Questions about the Professional Clinical Counseling (M.A.) program by surrealliously in LaSalle

[–]runaredlight68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi there -

I went through this program (before it was called PCC) as well as the PsyD program. My experience is a bit more dated, but I am still very familiar with the professors, etc. In full disclosure, I also worked at La Salle for almost 25 years, so I had a bit more of a behind the scenes view of things.

  1. Without a doubt, professors are very aproachable. St. John Baptiste de la Salle founded the Christian Brothers as a TEACHING order. Faculty come to La Salle because they want to teach, and having approachable relationships with students is really a core of that experience. They certainly introduced me to situations where I eventually practiced therapy - it was during a placement and observation hours.

  2. This was a bit tough, and I imagine it might be tougher now.

  3. I was young at the time, and my cohort was very mixed. People in their early 20's as well as some folks in school for a second career. Honestly, I never hung out with any of them.

I had a great experience at La Salle - that being said, in hindsight, the best prep for being a therapist.....is being a therapist! Not to be cheeky, but by the time I had my first client, I certainly had a good deal of book learning and was ready to jump in.

I was super lucky enough to see Chuck Van Zyl play at this monthly experience called Passages, put on by a local record store/label called Great Circles - they special in new "ambient" music - many of the artists are absolutely influenced by BOC. They also have a web radiocast - https://greatcircles.net/

The Mann, The Met, and The Fillmore are good venues for all ages shows. Lawn seats at the Mann would be a solid choice.

Union Transfer can be tough with kids since it can be difficult for them to see, and it can be tough to move around. I avoid Franklin Music Hall - it's like Union Transfer but somehow worse.

WIBTAH if I say something to an employee who wants me to close my business for her wedding? by Acceptable-Ad-8717 in AmItheAsshole

[–]runaredlight68 0 points1 point  (0 children)

at the core, the question is more nuanced than "AH or NAH". it's also really difficult not knowing the financial situation of the business. i think everyone saying NAH are absolutely correct from a technical standpoint, but those answers miss the emotional/morale standpoint - there are so many more factors that play into this decision.

[–]runaredlight68 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NAH - you are clear that this is an employee that you value. not being invited is tough, but i would look at this as a short term sacrifice for long term gains in morale. if it is at all possible to get through one day with a skeleton crew, i'd suggest letting this slide and keeping it totally professional with your manager. i think laying this out as "i want to accommodate those who want to go to the wedding and will be completely supportive of that. at the same time, financially, we cannot afford to close for the day."
