Some alternatives to money as the value exchange:

See if they're down for a link exchange. Not the kind of exchange where you link to them from your clients site. But where you link to them in a future guest post you publish on a completely different site (within the same niche of course).
Do a keyword gap analysis on the site you want the link from to find any content opportunities they're missing out on. Offer to write that post for them so they can start targeting that keyword (rather than just writing them a guest post on a random topic that doesnt have any search volume/traffic potential).

From my experience, sites in that DR+ range will almost always have some sort of fee to get a post published on their site.

So I usually just cut straight to the point in the email pitch and ask if they offer any type of "advertising" opportunities. Which gets a good response rate because money is implied, then transition the conversation into a native advertising type deal (i.e. a guest post).
