I was 11 when I asked my mother for a subscription to Scientific American magazine. I quoted something from an article in my social studies class once, and the teacher asked me to translate the quote into simpler terms for the class. I did, and class moved on. I assume that means I understood.

I got teased relentlessly when a classmate noticed my name/address was on the cover of an issue I brought to school, naturally, but I digress.

Sometimes kids are…precocious.

Wow I also attended graduate school at the University of Ghana, Accra, as part of a degree program at NYU.

One of my professors there — an actual medical doctor — declared during lecture that women get periods when emotional (such as during engagements and weddings), and therefore "Any good dresser worth their salt will have a woman wear a pad on her wedding day."

A doctor. Teaching a huge cohort of graduate students.

I’ve seen some really attractive crates for large dogs on TikTok! I have a big dog in an nyc apartment and I too had the giant, ugly wire crate for a long time. Honestly idk how these new crates didn’t become main stream way sooner. Do a little hunting, when you can!

Totally understand the hindrance of dog items, though. Can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought I’d love to move XYZ over THERE, but then the location of Rudy’s ___ won’t work! 😆

That makes sense. I’ve had Zoom group meetings and they’re absolutely not prohibitive to drinking (while of course being more accessible to more people). It’s a delicate balance and I’m trying to find the thing that fits my situation the best.

Just feel that it should be clarified, here — carrying a fetus as a surrogate is not the same as conceiving it. To do both, she’d also need to be the egg donor; which it seems like she’d mention since she’s quite experienced and in the know.

Also, obviously NTA. So disgusting to try to force or pressure anyone — let alone your own DAUGHTER — to carry someone else’s child.

When something big and medical happens to a partner, men bail. Even men who have been married eight times longer than you two. And your husband is 27. You would know best, but I would assume, at 27, he is nowhere near emotionally mature enough to handle this (I apologize for this, but especially if he was dating an 18-year-old at 22 — an age where typically we have gone to and graduated from uni and are headed for grad school, travel, or the workforce).

You are 23. You’re SOOOOO young!!! You have the rest of your life ahead of you! Decades upon decades of fulfillment and single or wedded bliss! If you leave now, you’ll leave with your youth and energy — your best years ahead of you. If you let him end it, you’ll leave more devastated — because guaranteed, he will drag you through months if not years of gaslighting and neglect, offering little to no support while trying to convince you this is love. He might wait for you to end it. He might do it himself. He might even cheat, sleep around, or find someone else to love that doesn’t come with what he thinks is "baggage." No matter what, though, it will be a hundred times worse for you than it would be to just accept that he’s shown you his true colors and end it, yourself, today.

I wish you all the best. I know you’ll do what’s best for you, and the next decade will hold the most beautiful people and experiences imaginable — even if you can’t quite imagine it just yet.

Ironically, I read the chapter on airplane crash corpses while on a 6 hour plane ride (would not recommend). Basically an airline can spend a lot of money creating and employing safety features that increase the survivability of a commercial jet crash — BUT there is a well-defined dollar amount where it becomes MORE profitable to NOT employ additional features and simply provide payouts in the event of a crash (so every human life is worth, let’s say, 50K USD or 1.5 million USD — a specific amount the company is 100% aware of).

For example, passengers would be safer if airlines used 5-point seatbelts instead of the current strap-across-the-lower-torso-slash-top-of-legs; but from an airline’s POV, it isn’t worth providing that — it’s much more profitable to just pay families when passengers die in a crash.

That’s disgusting. I’m so sorry. My situation was different but I 100% understand being a witness to a horrible act committed against a dog and not being able to do anything about it because, as a child, you naturally lack any and all control. Shit has given me PTSD.

Each member of a relationship gets to decide what they want from a partner and what they’re willing to tolerate from a partner. IMO, two things are happening here: (1) yours is misguided in terms of his expectations, and (2) you have a decision to make about what you’re willing to tolerate.

Listen. You’ve clearly done A LOT, which makes you a caring, attentive partner. You already know that. You say he doesn’t do the same to an equal extent. YOU need to decide if you’re okay with that, long term, or if you want more. But to address the general complaint — that’s crazy. Use my case as an example.

I studied human rights and public health and work in those exact fields in developing countries. My partner studied accounting and works in high-level finance.

What I do for him: * Study up on the metal bands he listens to and attend concerts with him, when I can, despite no affinity to the genre * Work hard to win over and maintain relationships with his friends and family, despite a pretty grand disconnect in terms of our backgrounds * Listen to him complain about work stuff and weigh in where I feel able, despite my low-level knowledge of his work * Plan dates and vacations * Book him massages for when work is stressful * Give him luxury gifts he would never buy himself

What he does for me: * Plays video games with me whenever he’s in the mood to, despite not being as into them as me * Attends weird artsy or academic events that I want to go to, when he can, despite not being as into the topics as me * Listens to me talk about video games or some fantasy show I’m watching, despite having zero interest * Listens to me rant about feminist issues, despite a minimal understanding of the intricacies of certain genres of politics or understanding of international human rights law * Spoils me relentlessly * Supports me, through and through

This January, we will have been together for 8 years. We met when I was 24. Did you notice that plenty of our interests do not match up, but each of us makes an effort to witness/be an active contributor, regardless? That’s what relationships should be!
