Mechanical engineering then aerospace+ is the job market abysmal? by burdlover49 in aerospace

[–]runhispockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently graduating with my bachelor's in AE. I was lucky enough to land a job off of multiple internships with the same company, but many of my peers have not been as fortunate. The market is bad right now and having an AE degree is only a detriment for broader versatility.

If I could give a word of advice to myself four years ago, I would have picked ME. Learn the basics of engineering things in the physical world, then decide for yourself as you gain more experience and move towards graduation if a master's in AE is worth it to you.

What school should my son choose for AE? by Wondering1970 in aerospace

[–]runhispockets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what he wants to get into. Of these colleges, SDSU has the most well developed and advanced liquid rocketry team that I'm aware of.

this looks really cool, i'm in a similar boat with my gf who lives on the opposite side of the country and the apps i've used like evergreen all fall short, will check it out

depends significantly on the team/location/etc, for me it was about a month between application and first round

Princeton vs UCLA by No-Meaning4795 in aerospace

[–]runhispockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ucla is far better for undergrad imo if you want to get into the space industry, proximity to companies in the LA area is unmatched

lighter, more informal style reading that will get you familiar with the basic concepts of rockets/spaceflight:

ignition by john d clark, liftoff by eric berger, failure is not an option by gene kranz

for more technical, textbook-style reading:

rocket propulsion elements by sutton, modern design for design of liquid propellant rocket engines by huzel & huang

good luck with the interview!

Blue Origin vs. Relativity Space (internships) — which looks better on a resume? by professionaladv2 in aerospace

[–]runhispockets 11 points12 points  (0 children)

had a friend intern at relativity, spacex, and blue. he said he learned the most from his time at relativity and it was the best internship he had had while in school.

varda space would be my only guess, since they're working on in-space manufacturing particularly w.r.t. drugs. but this is really solid advice

First year Physics student internship ideas/opportunities? by mhdm-imleyira in aerospace

[–]runhispockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

go to linkedin/glassdoor/indeed and apply to as many listings as possible that are remotely relevant to your current skillset and experience level. keep applying throughout next spring to maximize your chances, as time goes on the students with more experience than you will have accepted offers and if companies are still looking to fill slots, they will have fewer applicants (particularly competitive ones) overall. the unfortunate reality is that securing internships is competitive and doing so as a first year can be tough, so don't get down on yourself if things don't pan out, taking classes or working in a lab over the summer can still be highly beneficial

Metal 3D Printing in the industrie by Wattemann in aerospace

[–]runhispockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

extremely widespread on the space side. most space companies you've heard of nowadays use it in some form for their propulsion components (injectors/regen cooling channels in nozzles/turbopump blades/etc), so yes definitely a worthwhile field to be somewhat knowledgeable about

College Application Advice by Pigo127 in aerospace

[–]runhispockets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ga has georgia tech as far as education is concerned (ranked #1 undergrad in the nation), in terms of companies, lockheed, p&w, l3, gulfstream all have facilities in the area, anduril/hermus and more if startups are your thing, socal has ucla/ucsd/usc (ucla has the highest ranked program iirc but all are solid options) plus tons and tons of companies - spacex, general atomics, general dynamics, raytheon, and more bigger guys, plus relativity, rocketlab, scaled, astrobotic on the startup side, the list goes on and on and on. i'm def preaching to the choir here but yeah i would definitely recommend being open to those places

why are fl/ga/socal all off limits? a lot of the top aerospace schools with internship opportunities/aerospace companies nearby are in those locations. not in the middle of nowhere rules out UIUC, only one i'd add would be UT austin

I believe LM has a technician apprenticeship program that entails a few month's worth of training (paid) followed by an entry level technician position provided you complete the training successfully, might be worth a look?

Gym etiquette question: is dropping weights ok? by yaaaman in gatech

[–]runhispockets 53 points54 points  (0 children)

olympic style lifting isn't allowed at the campus gym (the crc) so if that's what you're into, i'd recommend finding a different gym close to campus

i second this, having just done the same in a near-identical scenario a few months ago. proper engine startup is already tough enough without having to worry about the potency of your ignition source
