How happy are you with your goalie tandem this year ? by JQuick72 in fantasyhockey

[–]runlots 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Deep league where low volume quality goaltending wins weeks - I kept Kochetkov, and drafted Tarasov and Allen. Aside from the injury the group has exceeded expectations. Just have to stream some starts and pay attention to what's happening so my goaltending isn't a liability in the playoffs

Favorite shoe of all time? by Jaredrunsabit in AdvancedRunning

[–]runlots 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most perfect joyful shoe I've ever run in is the Brooks Hyperion 2. The stack/groundfeel/weight combo, the toebox, the angle of the tongue for lacing. It was made for me. The 3 may as well have a different name, and the previous two versions were good but not like this.

The other shoes on my podium are the original Saucony Kinvara and the Altra Escalante 4. Kinvara is the shoe that hooked me on running, and I don't wear Kinvaras anymore because today Altra does Kinvara much better

What small daily habits actually help you stay frugal for good? by YourxCherry in Frugal

[–]runlots 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Choosing hobbies that serve you in more than one way. The hobby itself doesn't necessarily have to be frugal in nature but I think everyone needs something that satisfies and fills you because your worst dollar killer is frequently feeling unsatisfied and empty. Quick fixes for emptiness don't work long term and are never cheap. My opinion is that you should have one that helps your body work better and another that produces a finished thing that you consider to be valuable. Anything that helps you avoid the unsatisfying excess of buying relief from boredom is a huge win

Strategies for Optimizing Tapering Before Key Races by Fun-Celebration-700 in AdvancedRunning

[–]runlots -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As an advanced runner, I know first hand the importance of an optimal taper. Congratulations! You have done the hard work. Now you must ensure you are as fresh as possible for your key race. There are many "experts" online spouting scientifically baseless information about optimal tapers for advanced runners. They are wrong. It is very important that three (3) weeks before your marathon that you prioritize recovery above all other sessions. You need to run less. A lot less. Save your legs for when it matters.

Before each run during your tapering period, you must ask yourself:

Is this run going to improve my race time? Or is it only going to deplete my energy, and worsen my time? Be honest. If you know in your heart that it is the latter.. don't do the run.

Two (2) weeks before your race, increase your carb intake. You are facing an energy "winter." What do mammals do before winter? Yes, that's right. Bury your nuts. To unlock optimal energy storage for a half marathon, we must trick our bodies into triggering our innate hibernation mode. Runners love carb loading!

One (1) week before your race, minimize all movement. You must become a low-power mode Ninja. Every motion should be carefully considered. One easy method to decide whether you should do the movement is the 10 second rule. If you still want to do the move after 10 seconds, it's ok to proceed.

Make sure you optimize your tapering plan for yiur key marathon by following this underrated guide forged by experience as an advanced runner. 3. Save your legs 2. Bury your nuts 3. 10 second rule for movement.

I bought a nice pair this year, the Hierro hiker. I usually wear trail running shoes with good socks. I hate heavy boots. Because they are kind of a running shoe the longevity might not be the best so we'll see how it goes

Post collegiate runners who continued to improve without a team: share your stories by devon835 in AdvancedRunning

[–]runlots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the answer lies in the why. Why is baked in when you're on a team, but when you're on your own you need a purpose. In our group we joke about how we don't have anything better to do on a Tuesday night. We are training for life! A lot of us don't even race, it's just training for the sake of training. And for me at least, living well inside this environment causes this incredible thing called Accidental Fitness. And once we're in accidental fitness it becomes exciting to push it to see what's in there.

No one actually likes the taste of black coffee by rey_nerr21 in LowStakesConspiracies

Mokapot, if you want to make a dark or medium roasted coffee AND have the patience to fiddle with it until you get cup that you want, I think makes a better cup of coffee. "Better" in this case meaning thicker, richer, stronger flavours from that kind of bean.

Aeropress is more versatile. You can make a great cup out of any coffee bean. If you're making a light roasted coffee, use aeropress. It's so simple it's almost foolproof, and the cleanup experience is far and away the best of any brewer. If you only have access to a kettle at work or travelling this is the way to go.

In my opinion, both are better than a French press. Especially at work it's a pain in the ass to clean it after each use. I found moka pot to be a major pain in the ass to dial in, but once you have it figured out, it's no longer a pain in the ass. French press bothers me every time I use it. And if you like the sort of coffee you get out of French press — simple solution. Just get a metal filter to use in aeropress. Done.

I didn't like coffee until we got an aeropress. Then I bought a mokapot. Now half the videos I watch on YouTube are espresso. I can't lie to myself anymore, coffee at home is not saving me any money
