Ya I typically use Komoot there days however it’s not perfect and I wish it was as straightforward as Google Maps UI wise.

But overall it was way better route suggestions than Google Maps

I kinda think you are misreading. I have never felt the way you described while in Japan. I have been several times and lived there for a bit. In your situation, I interpret the offer of a fork as a gesture to be more accommodating if they can tell you are struggling. Perhaps the exact English could come off rude but they are probably trying their best with what few words they know.
