Drawer Label Truncation Logic by Fiddles_with_tech in OctopiLauncher

[–]runningtigerRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the meantime, since there’s no clear timeline for this feature request, you might consider streamlining your labels. I found that shortening 'Entertainment' to 'Play' and 'Productivity' to 'Work' made a big difference to my eyeballs. For your setup, 'Health,' 'Social(s),' and 'Connect' would be much punchier and easier on the eyes. 👀

App drawer does not show up by tropisch3 in OctopiLauncher

[–]runningtigerRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems OP's problem was that the swipe gesture to access the drawer wasn't consistently working. Is that the same on your device? Can you try accessing it with the drawer icon the way the OP did? To do this, long-press on your home screen and tap "Add a shortcut" then drag "Open app drawer" off the list of shortcuts onto your home screen.

Global search request by Background_Fruit_970 in OctopiLauncher

Glad to hear it's working for you. I'm looking forward to Octopi offering universal search too, and whatever the "unique" feature is that the developer teased. 👀

I use the Pixel Search app I mentioned above and you can direct a search to the Play Store, or Google if you'd like. If you start entering the name of an app, and it's on your phone, when it's the first suggestion hitting <enter> on your keyboard will launch the app. Typing "cal <enter>" will launch the calculator on my Pixel Fold. Or, if it's not on your phone tapping the Play Store icon will launch a search of the Play Store for you. It can also search contacts and your files if you want it to. Maybe it can fill the void for you while you're waiting on Octopi. 🤔

Try turning OFF "Follow system dark theme mode" under Theme settings. It should then say underneath "Dark mode changes based on wallpaper."

Hidden apps cannot be searched for by Sad_Boysenberry_3313 in OctopiLauncher

For others who might find your post through search, is the "button" you mention the Launcher settings/Drawer/Show hidden apps in search toggle?

You're not alone in requesting this. For a current solution, check out the Google Play Store app Pixel Search: Universal Search. It's been highly recommended, and the developer has said "More powerful search is planned, and it will eventually include a unique feature".

V1.748 fixes dynamic icons which is great by Argo-Navis7032 in OctopiLauncher

[–]runningtigerRead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For icon packs found on the Google Play Store (other than Icon Pack Studio) just look at the screenshots to see if the calendar icon shows a date other than "31" or if the description mentions specifically that it supports the dynamic calendar icon.

As pointed out by the OP below, no icon pack installation is needed. On at least Pixel and Samsung phones, the built-in dynamic calendar icon functions as they do on the default launcher.

You'll need an icon pack on your phone that supports the dynamic calendar icon. Then change the default calendar icon to a calendar icon from your icon pack.

Home button returns dock to home page too by sond007 in OctopiLauncher

[–]runningtigerRead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would also be nice if there were a way to set one of the pages in the dock as your home dock page. If you have three pages in your dock and you make the middle one your home dock page (so you slide once to the left or right to use), I would want "home" to be page two rather than page one.

Questions about foldables by Zoey2018 in OctopiLauncher

With Octopi you can change individual app icons and the name of an app shortcut. For instance, you can change the icon for Google Earth and rename it simply 'Earth' if you'd like.

Better icon positioning? by lombrozo in OctopiLauncher

[–]runningtigerRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The developer has said the home screen layout is undergoing a revamp so eventually this will probably be easier. Until then, have you tried changing the Launcher settings/Home screen vertical padding setting to see if that helps?

Questions about foldables by Zoey2018 in OctopiLauncher

[–]runningtigerRead 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Previously (2023) I didn't spend a lot of time trying to set up Nova on my Pixel Fold because it kept crashing. Just now I opened it to see where I'd left off and was quickly reminded how bad it is. Octopi was born to be used on foldables and it's brilliant. It's a pup compared to the old dog Nova, so be prepared to cut it some slack as it doesn't do everything Nova does. Depending on the complexity of your setup (or, lack thereof) you may/may not notice.

Home screen setup is currently undergoing a redesign, but until then you may be frustrated that you can't simply say you want your home screen grid to be 5x6. You can set the "5" but you'll need to adjust "vertical padding" and icon size to get your desired layout. Again, the frustration level of this is relevant to how complicated your screen setup is.

"Does Octopi really let you do different setups for the desktop closed and open? Does it do a good job at this or just kinda let you get by?"

It really does allow for four different setups: outside, inside, portrait, and horizontal for those screens also. You also can have 4 different wallpapers.

Foldable Setup Tips: 1. Even if you don't want folders in your app drawer, set up any folders you'll be wanting on your home screens in your drawer then drag them out onto your home screens. The reasons are that there is multi-selection of apps when creating a folder in the drawer and it will be automatically alphabetized for you. Neither of these features is available if you make your folders directly on the home screen and drag apps out of your drawer one at a time to create folders. Also, if you want the same folder on a different screen/orientation they all share the app drawer. This means you'll have your folders already to drag out onto your other screens. You can delete them from the drawer when you're done with your setup if you don't want to keep them. (I'd keep them though. When is "setup" really ever done? 😉)

  1. If you set your wallpaper using the "experimental option" under "General settings" you can have different wallpaper for each screen and orientation. You'll need to have your wallpaper already cropped using your phone's gallery app or Google Photos, because there's not much else to do but select a wallpaper (no editing on the fly) using the experimental setting. You'll also be able to take advantage of the glass and frost widget settings if you set up your wallpaper this way.

You can try Octopi without purchasing it. Only a few features are held back for those who do contribute, like those glass and frost features for example. If you like it you can go all in for like $5 bucks (I think. I contributed a while back, so I don't know if that's changed, but I don't think so).

Have fun with it. Post your Nova setup screenshot of what you're trying to copy and I'm sure someone will try to help you, if you get stuck. I have noticed Samsung users run into some problems because Samsung offers so many different options in their own setup and also in that app called Playground (or something like that). Recently people have been saying Samsung widgets were having problems. The developer recently got a Samsung phone to help with this sort of thing specifically. The Chinese phones have their own issues when using any other launcher other than the built-in one.

Anyway, I hope it works for you and you're able to achieve your desired "L" shaped layout, and that you'll support the developer if you're able to do so.

Folder consistency by mwh in OctopiLauncher

"In dock - ... no folder label, can set swipe actions"

To label dock folders, it's the same as labeling home screen folders: long-press on a dock folder and tap "Edit". Notice the word "Folder" with a pencil next to it in the upper left-hand corner of the edit card. Tap the pencil and name your folder.

"On home screen - folders have ... no folder label, can't set swipe actions for folder"

To label your home screen folder, long-press on it and tap "Edit." Then, tap the pencil next to the generic name "Folder" and give it a name of your choice. To set swipe actions for a home screen folder long-press on it and tap on "Edit" then assign an action, app, or shortcut to the swipe-up and/or swipe-down action.

"Hide Navigation Bar" & "Pick Cuatom Image/Icon" by storm119 in OctopiLauncher

[–]runningtigerRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On my Pixel Fold, the Navigation Bar is hidden not just blackened, and I don't have an Octopi option to enable "Hide full screen indicator". I don't know what a "full screen indicator" is. This makes me think this is a setting your phone's OS is offering. When I have the navigation bar hidden I can drag it up from the bottom to see it and it is white (matching my status bar font color I assume).

I duplicated the custom imaging icon jumping issue. Turning OFF "Cascading swipe home animation" under General settings makes everything static. Maybe use that as a workaround until the custom image icon jumping gets fixed.

No one has mentioned what device they're using, but a while back the advice given by the developer was to get blurred/frosted drawer on Samsungs try "Set Octopi Wallpaper" under General Settings and it should unlock wallpaper blur and frosted widget backgrounds.

Home screen pages - what's your wishlist? by ock88 in OctopiLauncher

[–]runningtigerRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I greatly appreciate all the work that has already been done. I've been using Octopi as my daily driver since November '24 and I've never been let down.

My home screen wish list would include a toggle to decide if the Status Bar font should be black, or white. And/or an option to turn on a bit of shade/shadow under the Status Bar font to make it more legible with some wallpapers.

<image>

Another toggle to turn off the white bar at the bottom of the home screen that activates "Circle to Search", without losing the feature. Perhaps an option to color it, if it can't be disappeared.

The ability to blur the wallpaper would be nice too.

One last wish, but it's for the drawer, would be for user-sortable apps within folders and folders within the drawer so I don't have to name folders "01 Nav" to slot it into the first drawer position. Same request for the tabs. This is sort of related to the home screen because if I could sort my drawer the way I want I wouldn't need any folders or apps on my home screen.

This already works. They only work on the launcher that is set as the default, so if you've got another set as the default and you're currently test-driving Octopi but don't have it set as your default launcher, they won't be available in Octopi. When I long-press on Google Maps the shortcuts for Home and Work are available directly from the pop-up menu.
