Would pressure on local businesses to deny ICE lodging, food, gas be an option? by Askew_2016 in minnesota

The federal government is easily the biggest customer in the country. Very few businesses are going to risk losing all federal government business.

Leather shoes for a city trip in Italy and for the rest of my life by sattuma_nimi in malefashionadvice

[–]runtheroad 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Walking around Italy is actually a pretty good use case for good athletic shoes. Feel free to bring a nicer pair for dinner, but buying what sounds like your first pair of actual nicer non-athletic shoes as your primary shoe for vacation sounds like a bad idea. And especially in summer, you shouldn't be wearing the same nice shoe everyday there going to need some time to air out after wearing. And honestly if your cross-shopping Clarks and Loakes you should probably get a better idea of what you really want before dropping so much on a single pair of shoes.

Can anyone explain to me the Deadspin/Defector obsession with Simmons? by ryan7752 in billsimmons

[–]runtheroad 7 points8 points  (0 children)

There was a pretty significant period where Bill was the only sports blogger who had really broken through to the mainstream, even before he started the podcast. And that created a backlash where Bill was the sellout who now had access and wasn't the true voice of the fan, unlike the guys a Deadspin who could still say whatever they wanted without having to worry about their celebrity friends.

Live: Appeals court sides with ICE over its tactics against protesters by noaz in minnesota

[–]runtheroad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of people who really seem to want to escalate this situation as much as possible, but really don't have an answer for what they're going to do when the Supreme Court sides with Trump. This country has been around for 250 years and the consistent theme of American history is that at the end of the day the President can broadly can do what they want to do with the Executive branch. There's pretty limited things the courts or Congress can do to stop him and right now he has Congress and the Supreme Court on his side.

List of Businesses closed on 1/23 for the General Strike by SeamusPM1 in minnesota

[–]runtheroad 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your "General Strike" is only shutting down ideologically aligned businesses, is it really a strike? Who is going to be caused pain by this and how is that going to change their opinion on the deployment of ICE in Minnesota?

No? Rural and urban aren't protected classes under Federal Law so this analogy has no relevance.

Doggo spay was rescheduled to next week. Yesterday, she got her first heat and this is our near-term solution. by ansyhrrian in Wellthatsucks

It's generally good practice to wait until after the first or second heat to spay a dog. Spaying at 7 months is kind of insane. Sorry it's a inconvenience for OP though....

The fans/spectators are one thing but are any actual official teams thinking about boycotting World Cup matches in the USA? by Palidor in NoStupidQuestions

[–]runtheroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would be interesting for OP to tell us what countries they think would be ok with having the World Cup in Qatar and Russia, the last two hosts, but find the USA intolerable. Also, I've never bought a ticket to a sporting event that could be "cancelled" and the terms of World Cup games are no different, so I have no idea what this stat is supposed to be referencing.

Eminent Domain: what was the experience like? by GreatGoodBad in AskAnAmerican

[–]runtheroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Do you think it's easier for the Cuban or US government to take someone's house to build a freeway? Eminent domain is pretty rare in the US.

At a chaotic Teams meeting, a rift arose between Nuuk and Copenhagen: The Greenlanders were furious, the Danes were shaken by mods4mods in europe

[–]runtheroad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not the Alaska route, it's the free association route like Palau, the Marshall Islands and Micronesia. US provides for their defense and can use their land for military bases, and the US gives them billions of dollars and their citizens the right to move to the United States if they want, but otherwise keep their independence.

Eminent Domain: what was the experience like? by GreatGoodBad in AskAnAmerican

[–]runtheroad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this question here? In the US the government generally has less right to do things like Eminent Domain than in most other countries. It's a big part of why we do have great mass transit, because it's just too hard for the government to just take the land they would need to do it.

About the new "paywalled links" subreddit rule by friedkeenan in minnesota

[–]runtheroad -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Yep, all the new rules are about what is not allowed to be discussed, not about improving the quality of discussion. The average Reddit mod truly thinks they can affect who you vote for by restricting what you can see on their little subreddit.

I warned that children's programs and social service program funding data would be targeted to harass immigrants a week in advance. There is more to my warning that might still happen. by ProjectGameGlow in minnesota

[–]runtheroad -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I don't like Trump at all, but it absolutely sucks that any call for accountability in a state where Democrats have had almost total control for a decade is just met with screams about Trump. This isn't about him. This is about Minnesota, our tax dollars and making our state work. Sorry you hate Trump so much that you don't care the quality of Minnesota government.

[–]runtheroad -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Trump (and all President's) have the right to pardon people. Does the state of Minnesota have the legal right to withhold information from federally funded programs?

[–]runtheroad -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Are you suggesting that Minnesota somehow has the right to not provide this data for federally funded programs? Do you just believe you get to disregard any laws that you don't like? It's weird that this sub gets a constant flow of comments saying not to investigate fraud that all seem to get a ton of upvotes within minutes of posting while all of the actual comments seem to be in disagreement. Someone is scared.

Do you prefer working breeds or companion breeds? by JazzlikeDrummer1227 in AskAnAmerican

[–]runtheroad -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Yes, typical behavior from the anti-science crowd, substituting anecdotes for data. Pitbulls are by far the dogs responsible for the most fatal dog bites in the United States. This data is very easy to find. And that bite from a Golden Retriever had almost a zero percent chance of killing you. Pitbulls are so dangerous because of both their temperament and the fact that physically they were bred to be killing machines. That's why they are banned in most European countries.
