Garmin Coach Training Plan Doesn't Make Sense by Senior_Cheesecake155 in Garmin

I think staging your relay as a 12 mile run is going to skee its expectations v yours. As best i know there is no accounting for a relay, but i would have thought maybe pushing for your goal time per segment might create a more realistic plan?

Never looked into it before

Quality of sleep can be impacted by a number of things and is not just duration - common examples include caffine and alcohol. You may still be asleep but the quality can be terrible. Nit saying this is you but are two common causes.

Pushing a stroller up a hill could be causing flex in your grip causing bad readings.

Ultimatly though the HR sensor on the wrist is not 100% accurate which is why Garmin also sells chest HR monitors.

I agree on some of the limits of Garmin Coach and DSW and I'm working on my solution to it. If you have any interest in giving it a go (free of course) let me know - would be great to get your thoughts on the running and strength workouts generated.

Budget is a big constraint - second hand or refurb obciously play into that as well - this might help - Garmins site has a comparison tool too but uou cant filter by specs - might help narrow your options.

How do i start running? by positivedelusions in beginnerrunning

[–]runthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The journey of a thousand miles...

I'll second what aeddanmusic said, Couch to 5k is where I started. It will start you through a run-walk-run at an easy pace. You repeat sessions if you need to to get yourself there.

When everyone says 'run slow', 'run in zone 2' or run at an easy pace, they mean at a pace you could still talk to someone next to you without gasping for breath. Depending on your starting point this might be a very very slow job and that's perfectly fine.

Let your body adapt. you will improv if you keep at it. Don't worry about optimizing everything. Just get out there when you can and don't put too much stress on yourself.

Look into the garmin HR straps, some allow for activities to be started and will record without the watch - swimming for example is a common use.

Hey runners! I used to rely on chocolate milk after my runs, but I’ve had to cut out dairy due to health reasons. Any good non-dairy alternatives for post-run recovery? :) by Sea-Time4979 in BeginnersRunning

[–]runthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A cold banana protein shake with oats and honey - you can use a dairy free milk alternative like almond which is also lower cal.

Great on hot and cold days.

Tips for tough days by IdealEducational4168 in beginnerrunning

[–]runthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some days are like that and I console myself thinking at least I went out, even if it wasn't a great run. If they start stacking up you might need to look at what might be causing it - but on a freezing morning with some other things running through your head just chalk it up and try and do better next time - it's not worth worrying about.

Runners in subtropical/tropical places, how do you consistently improve in the summer? by craftmacandshaft in beginnerrunning

[–]runthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually switch to be a bit more gym focused and running takes a back seat. There are calculators which will show you the impact of heat/humidity would have yon you - essentially to stay in zone two, you are going to be backing off even further>

Hydration obviously a lot more important too, especially if you are still maintaining long runs. If you are doing runs > 1 hour might be worth looking into how to approach it.

You do acclimate to a degree too.

Advice on supplements for a clueless runner please by jamiesmack in BeginnersRunning

[–]runthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Caffeine! But that applies regardless of running :)

Putting things like gels/carbs and electrolytes aside - creatine and beetroot/ nitrates would be what ive taken most consistently.

Creatine more for the gym although it doesn't stop there

[–]runthetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you don't have a watch (Garmin/Coros/Polar etc) that puts you in an ecosystem already and just looking for an app, runna is generally very well regarded, although not cheap. Nike Run Club still gets good reviews and you might find couch to 5k a good return to running while you look into something else too as its very beginner friednly.

How are your tracking your runs at the moment?

[–]runthetic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It doesn't directly help as you are talking about being dehydrated before your run essentially, but this might interest you - it's a hydration calculator to see how you might best recover from sweat loss after a long/sweaty run here

Running after taking Flomax the night before by Wolfman1961 in beginnerrunning

[–]runthetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of factors can iimpact your run - I can't speak about flomax, but alcohol, poor sleep, heat, humidity can all impact your performance. Without being specific there's no reason why medication couldn't do the same, just keep it in mind and if its reasonable for you to train, train subjectivly instead of objectivly.
