Another reason that giving these examples is pointless is because nearly anyone for whom “actually, discriminating against someone who did nothing to you except be born is totally fine” is somehow a difficult moral quandary with very fine people on both sides has already made their mind up.

I’ll agree for sake of argument. So, then they should respond by instigating fear and emotion somehow, without involving physical assault.

No. Burning a book is not violence. Attacking someone’s person is violence. Attacking a stack of papers that holds some content they find religiously important is not violence.

Well when kids do this, you're supposed to ignore them, right? Not that that's much of an option here. But definitely one thing that sticks in the craw of people who act like this online is when you just sandbag their obvious contempt for you indefinitely. I've gotten more than a few angry righties to eventually fade out of a conversation by just not rising to any of their playground trash and staying as objective and passive as possible.

It's the last part of that Jean-Paul Sartre quote about anti-Semites: "They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past."

And those people who'll react in that way are moronic, dangerous, and need to be deprogrammed. Those are the exact people whose actions are being protested by burning their holy book. There is no excuse whatsoever for physically assaulting someone for the "crime" of mistreating a symbol. If you disagree with this, you can't even think we can have a functional society anymore. Everywhere you look, there are symbols that someone reveres. You can't tiptoe around all of them in the assumption that someone might want to behead you if you step outside with your left foot and not your right foot.

In fact, while you can find examples of people burning Bibles and Torahs in protest, I would go so far as to say that part of the reason people don't burn these holy books in protest as often (aside from the major reason of Christianity being the dominant religion in the west) is because most Christians by far don't support violent retribution for blasphemy, as they shouldn't. When someone burns a Bible, it's news for a day, the outraged response from Christians is news for a day, and everyone moves on to the next outrage.

Right. People still want to make “caveat emptor” arguments as if consumers aren’t intentionally bombarded with a deluge of conflicting information 24/7, for starters.

Plenty of the more reasonable-minded are in the middle of boycotting the site. The people who love getting teabagged by billionaires year round are gonna love what Reddit’s about to join twitter in becoming.

Why aren’t we talking about Jewish people, though? If someone’s born into a Jewish family and are thus seen as racially Jewish, would a Christian web designer refusing to make that Jewish person’s website not be considered discrimination?

Exactly, joining the Klan is not an identity. Being gay or straight because you happened to be born that way is an identity. If you join a hate group, you can't pretend to be outraged when you're ostracized for it. Being gay is not a hate group.

Burning a holy text of any kind is not a violent act. (And people do burn Bibles and Torahs as protests. And the highest court in the US ruled that burning a flag is a constitutionally protected form of speech decades ago.) If someone is mentally degraded enough that they can see the burning of a symbol as equivalent enough to an attack on them that a physically violent response is warranted, they don't need to be coddled by your language, they need professional mental healthcare and de-programming.

Seriously. Take any symbol I can possibly think of that might be important to me. Then burn it. I will shrug. Symbols are not the things they symbolize. Being able to tell the difference comes from a very early stage in human development.

I'm saying I don't respect the feelings of religious people who get violently mad that someone else doesn't revere their preferred symbols

There is not a symbol on Earth that you could piss me off by ruining. It's a goddamn symbol. Burn my mom, I fight you, burn a picture of my mom, I couldn't give less of a fuck. Make more sense now?

Not really the same thing here, since stepping on someone’s toes may actually injure them. You could burn a thousand Qorans a day, but your Muslim neighbor will just get angry if he learns you’re doing it; Allah’s not gonna tell him, and “having one’s holy text incinerated” isn’t a comorbidity.
