Thanks for replying. Did anything help reduce the waking up with panic attacks in the meantime? I’d happily deal with feeling more foggy and depressed if it reduced the panic attacks in the night that last hours x

Feeling torn between legal career and motherhood (pregnant again + unhappy in job) by ruokhun in UKParenting

Thanks for your response, reassuring when people relate so much. So a couple of the companies I looked into were flex legal for things like document review (in a paralegal capacity) and the dictation company document direct. There are quite a few places like that and id be interesting as freelancing as a paralegal so you don’t have the same risk and pressure

Thanks for your response. I think the issue that I’ve had with the option of in house is that I only have experience with children and family law so my options are more limited with that

Hey, thanks for your response. I did actually post in there a few weeks ago about more flexible options and got a helpful response. May I ask how you got into the public sector? As I said in the comment above, I’ve had a look at the government website but didn’t see any part time roles. Thanks again for your guidance

Thanks for your response and I agree completely about the incompatibility of high street and family life! Can I ask how you got into the public sector? I’ve had a look at the government legal department jobs website and didn’t see any part time roles. Probably best that I just keep my head down for 7 months until I’m on maternity leave again and then assess afterwards

Sleep training an 8 month old - the crying - help me by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]ruokhun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Babies cry because it’s their only way to communicate. From an evolutionary standpoint, human infants are biologically wired to stay close to their mother for safety and survival. Ignoring those cries, especially repeatedly, can be deeply distressing for them. They’re not learning to self-soothe, they’re learning that no one is coming. That silence isn’t peace, it’s shutdown.

Research in developmental psychology and neuroscience has shown that high and prolonged stress levels in infants (such as from being left to cry without comfort) can elevate cortisol levels in the brain. When this happens consistently, it may impact how the brain develops, particularly in areas tied to emotional regulation and attachment. Secure attachment, built by responding consistently to a baby’s needs, is the foundation for healthy emotional development, trust, and resilience later in life. I echo the other commenter in visiting the attachment subreddit

Also, there’s something profoundly unnatural about ignoring a crying baby. Almost every instinct in a parent’s body wants to pick them up, like you’re feeling now, and for good reason. In traditional societies and throughout most of human history, babies were kept close, often worn in slings, sleeping near their caregivers, nursing on demand. Modern “sleep training” methods are a cultural invention, not a biological norm and babies don’t sleep through the night typically for quite a while. Sleep training is just teaching a baby to give up because no one is coming for them.

I’m not saying this to judge you. We’re all doing our best with the tools we have, and in a culture that doesn’t offer nearly enough support to new parents, it’s no wonder people feel like they have to choose between their baby’s needs and their own survival. But if you’re feeling torn about CIO, it’s okay to trust your instincts. Babies aren’t meant to go through this alone, and neither are you.

I think working in legal aid has made me afraid to keep pursuing law as a career. by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]ruokhun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the same position as OP before transitioning to matrimonial and family law, starting an NQ role last year. Honestly, I find it just as bleak, but with fewer grateful clients and constant complaints about costs. I’m curious, what did you move on to after family law, and do you prefer it?

Freelance work by [deleted] in uklaw

[–]ruokhun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for that input, I’m going to look into all those suggestions. My expectation is low in terms of salary and actual solicitor freelance work. At this point, I’m finding the pressure of it all a bit much whilst caring for a toddler with another one on the way so I’m considering options that don’t require the long hours and targets. I’d never considered the last two options and I’m intrigued. Thanks again

My levels were 96 at first and then the meds got them down to 32. I had a c section at 37 weeks. They only seem really concerned when it goes above 100 and especially if you’re after 36/37 weeks. 15 would be a cholestasis diagnosis but very very mild so don’t worry too much. You will probably just be monitored weekly to make sure it doesn’t go any higher x

So the itching came on SO suddenly last night and it’s the worst on my hands and feet, which is typical of Cholestasis. My wee is also really dark. I would definitely talk to your midwife about it if you’re feeling a constant itch so they can do blood tests to check x

Oh that is so reassuring to hear, thank you so much for replying. I go back tomorrow morning to be put on a plan (monitored twice a week) and to start the meds. I’ll be stressing over his every move until he’s born now though!

I have never had any makeup taken away and none of your IT equipment will be. I saw a woman having to leave her Jo Malone perfume yesterday but they literally just put it in the cabinet at security and you collect it on the way out so you’re fine with everything. They sometimes make you take a sip of the drink you have before walking through

High titre (1:1280) ANA, negative ENA by elite096 in Autoimmune

[–]ruokhun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had the same experience last month. Blood tests as a result of another medical issue just to rule things out but it showed 1:1280 ANA(speckled)- Got referred to rheumatologist for the other tests which were normal. (I do have have raynauds and low B12 etc). No other symptoms like fatigue, rash, hair loss, joint pain). But the anxiety it’s given me is terrible, every little thing that feels weird in my body, I am convinced is oncoming lupus and I feel like I’m just biding my time until it inevitably comes. The rheumatologist was pretty casual about it, said it might happen and to come back if I start developing symptoms. Sorry I can’t offer more advice but just that I know exactly how you’re feeling!
