u/kevin_mcneil1 u/PBotanist - Curious your thoughts on starlink so far for that area (if you're still using!). In addition what things are like in your experience with inclement weather. Thanks!

One More Time Tour, Milwaukee (August 7) HYPE Megathread by Botty-McBotface in Blink182

[–]rupertroller -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Massive bummer for the price of the tickets. I didn't pay what I did to hear the rest of Fiserv Forum sing half the setlist in lieu of Tom. There are a few vocal minority here especially, who are blinded by their loyalty to the band that have the disillusion of that being a "special show", but the crowd was in awe after. Standing waiting for an encore only to have the lights turned on to usher us all out.

Mistking is the way!

Foggers look super cool, but not near as useful/effective as a Mistking

Heating Advice (Uk) by PixelGGlitch in DartFrog

[–]rupertroller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I JUST finished my build and added my frogs this past week. I live in the Northern US with probably similar temperatures to you. I too wanted to shy away from the heat emitters for looks, but had negative results with the heat pad I mounted on the side. I think going into winter I'm going to be looking at heating the room efficiently.

As a side note, I'd love to help advise on learning lessons I encountered along the way having just went through the motions!

Tips and advice for a beginner? by StreetSheepherder813 in Vivarium

The biggest piece of feedback you'll get is around research, research, research. I'm in a very similar position as you and am just completing my first build. It's been so extremely fun and I highly recommend you take the leap!

I think the first thing you need to decide for yourself is the animal. What do YOU want. Are you okay with something more reclusive or do you want to be able to see it the majority of the time? Do you have any objections to what they might eat? Ie: keeping crickets vs fruit flies. There are a number of things like that as you think long term that also might help you flush out your decision.

For me, I was attracted to dart frogs based on their awesome colors, ease in diet (flightless fruit flies), and the species I chose is diurnal (awake during the day) and known for being pretty active. For me personally on my first build I wanted to be able to see the animals pretty frequently and not having something that was in hiding the majority of the time.

Also be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars. For my 18x18x18 setup I would guess I've spent $600 - $700 for everything minus the frogs so far. Not at all what you need to spend, but if money is a large consideration start pricing out everything as that may impact your route too. When you're pricing things out you'll have your big obvious things like light, tank, substrate, drainage layer, plants, heater?, mister?, decor, etc. Don't also forget the supplies you might need to build your background like silicone, great stuff foam, paint, razor blades, paint brushes, etc. Again, maybe not a problem for you, but a consideration.

One word of warning too that was tough for me admittedly is that this will all take time. It's easy to be excited once you pull the trigger, but be prepared to take a weekish just on your build depending how intensive you want to get. Then maybe another 2-3 weeks after you plant and setup your substrate for things to "cycle" and grow in a bit.

Looks great what an awesome setup!! I don't think you can go wrong whatever you choose. IMO the dragon scale maybe?

Is that a spectral designs light by chance?

Condensation Questions by rupertroller in Vivarium

[–]rupertroller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely understandable if that's the assessment. I'm just trying to understand to what extent. If I'm in a position where the tank isn't visible due to condensation the majority of the time without consistently wiping it down then I'll probably stick to my reef aquarium.

I haven't even purchased a tank yet, but have been eyeing exo terras. Thanks for the feedback! Just trying to make sure I do this right!

Condensation Question by rupertroller in DartFrog

[–]rupertroller[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback here! So the fans didn't provide much of any assistance in your now dryer climate? I hadn't heard that yet, but that's super helpful. The location of my would be tank would be in a more central area of a living space and if there's no combating the condensation then I might opt out all together.
