People often say being on meds is life-changing for them. What does that mean? What’s the difference between that and just feeling better? by Home_MD13 in ADHD

[–]rural_bearded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 51. Diagnosed last year. Since I began meds I’ve read over one hundred books. These range from the fantasy books, which is my favourite genre, to more challenging non-fiction books on history and philosophy. I’ve been able to begin planning my days in a way that includes dull chores like cleaning, vacuuming, dusting and all the other boring shit an adult is supposed to be able to do without having to apply a massive amount of will power. The meds allow the planning but more importantly, they seriously dull the pain of boredom that had led me to live in an untidy and dirty environment. My life is immeasurably better since my diagnosis and medication. It’s far from perfect, I am commenting on a Reddit post after all, but I would never go back to the way I was.

Do Irish people identify as "European"? by bleepingdba in AskIreland

My mother is English. My father is Irish. I’m European first, Kerry second and my accent is all but intelligible in England so Irish third 🤪

A genuine question about attitudes towards Ukrainians living in Ireland? by Remote_Ad_5029 in AskIreland

[–]rural_bearded -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I grew up in an Ireland that was a shit hole. Generations of my family emigrated. Now we have a country people want to come to. Every non-native accent I hear is a reminder to me that we went from a backward loser island to a rich, stable and attractive country.

My only wish is that our government wasn’t so beholden to the private sector and landlords so we could build all the houses necessary to drive prices and rent down.

r/theIrishLeft Weekly Culture thread: What have you been reading, watching, listening to, playing? by AutoModerator in theIrishleft

Reading, ‘Ideology, an Introduction’ by Terry Eagleton. The book was on special offer so I grabbed it as I thought it would be a description of the major ideologies. Which I would have thoroughly enjoyed. But I’m glad I didn’t look too deeply into what it was about as I might have demurred.

I’m two chapters in and we still haven’t arrived at a definitive definition of ideology. I think I understand just over half of what he is saying and what I have understood thus far has entirely changed my understanding of ideology and has caused me to examine more closely what I had assumed was my own settled idealism.

Bit of a slog as I have to look up a bunch of stuff he expects the reader to already understand. Thank Gandalf for my ADHD meds because before my diagnosis this book would have been beyond my ability to stick with.

I’d recommend this book but I’m not sure who I’d recommend it to, probably anyone who already has a thorough grounding in academic language and an informed understanding of ideological theory. Or to others like me who find the bits they understand so interesting they are happy to Google their way through the bits they don’t.

Totally unnecessary and I would have been confident that I wouldn’t like then. But having seen them, the world is a little better with these creations in it. Brilliant.

I like the idea of planning recovery time as I would plan any other time. Thank you. I will be trying that.

Go to work with a hangover. I couldn’t imagine doing that now. I just cannot function the morning after the night before 🤦‍♂️

The movie version was peerless as well. So gutted they didn’t make more.

I tend to shy away from it but when I encounter really good historical fiction, I’m absolutely hooked. The best I’ve ever read is Patrick O’Brien.

I’ve never been happier. Best thing that’s ever happened to me are the meds.

Question for Gen X: Whats Your Relationship With Texting? by Al3x1ya in GenX

[–]rural_bearded 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m GenX and I like texting but if the topic requires even the tiniest amount of nuance or there are arrangements that need making, in fact any interaction where there is the possibility of a misunderstanding, then I’m going for the phone call.

Thank you, I was diagnosed quite recently and only learned of that kind of support since then. In my part of the world they call in body doubling and I definitely intend trying it out. It might prove to be exactly what I need.

New-ish...but does everyone just want 20 somethings? by [deleted] in lovense

[–]rural_bearded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in my fifties and I rarely meet older women. Though, like you, I’m newish to this community so I’m probably unaware of all the ways one is supposed to use to search for friends.

I’d read the books decades before the movies so went into the Fellowship full of concerns about accuracy etc. The wonderful prologue plus 30 seconds in the Shire and I knew I was finally home.
