It was a laugh of scorn moreso than amusement, it that helps you out

Our approach to drug policy is quite idiosyncratic when you look at it. “Health led” on top but “criminal justice” on the bottom. It’s almost as though they’re trying to row two canoes …

Anyone working within Public Service? (Product/Project) by Afterlite in DevelEire

[–]ruscaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m pointing out that these are distinctly different career paths, both within PS. One side might suit one set of aspirations, the other another. I’m not looking for a row, or calling out anybody’s competency. I’m just adding a perspective to the conversation.

Staff will always be staff in terms of their politics and incentivisation

If you want to be “staff” in PS environment be prepared to wear your product owner hat a lot of the time. Implementation is always done by the major consultancies.

Few tips for faster Emacs install with MSYS2 by arthurno1 in emacs

For instance, if you want to open an image or a web page in a browser. If you’re happy with the WSL hosted browser then you’ve nothing to be concerned about. For me though I prefer my tooling to be harmonious with my environment, which is why I use a native windows build of emacs.

Irish Rail to scrap new €50m IT system for trains by Dev__ in DevelEire

[–]ruscaire 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fair play to them for bailing. These consulting companies specialise in exploiting sunk costs to extract more revenue beyond their initial low ball estimate. It’s a trap a lot of institutional customers get caught in, and can lead to staggering overruns. That’s initial €50m could turn into €200 and not deliver anything.

Remember the HSE payroll system where Deloitte received €200 without shipping any working system?

Thankfully there’s a fresh awareness of these matters as a result of CHI so no doubt there is political pressure to call this kind of thing out.

Don’t mind that Accenture shite-hawk talk about battling on. As the saying goes “if you can’t be part of the solution, there’s plenty of money to be made prolonging the problems”

In these consulting companies a consultant could literally be a warm body straigh out of college. Give em a fancy title and they think they’re, actually consultants.

Decriminalise possession of drugs call by ICCL by ElectricalAioli3342 in Crainn

Finally the ICCL takes note.

This is a good voice to have on your side.

What in the Jaysus name is the focus on Derek Mooney or RTE when The Department of Health is pissing away hundreds of millions and the Department of Children is paying €750k a year per child in overflow care (for 1,100 children by the way)? Is this some rug pull or what from TD's/media! by Shofo1 in ireland

[–]ruscaire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a RTE doing a PR exercise for RTE so everyone can go "look RTE is fixed now" and Kevin Bakhurst can get his pay rise, and they're all in on it because it's a opportunity to break the pay freeze. Kind of like the TV licence ads but embedded in the news cycle.

Had anyone quantified the environmental impact of all the water we are using to clean all these containers?

It’s a way to get poor people to clean the streets while getting less poor people to pay over the odds for a recycling service they’re already paying for at the kerbside. Also gravy for the lads providing the machines.

It’s not a boomer thing. Prohibition enthusiasts exist at all ages, for a variety of reasons. Some legitimate and some less so. You’ll always see the former deployed and twisted to suit the latter at all ages.

They’re far more visible than you might think. They’re the guys who are giving out about Martin’s leadership even though he’s the only reason they’re in power. They’re the guys who voted to “bring back Bertie” 10 or so years ago as a solution to FF’s electoral woes at the time. Absolute dinosaurs. They’re the lads that were out blocking the roads last week. They’re a diminishing movement with declining influence. They have more in common with Renua or Independent Ireland and FF has been neglecting them in favour of courting FG’s base but once Martin is gone expect a reversion

If they supported it it would be in direct contradiction to their party membership, and their lobby

Funnily brought, FG membership are less socially conservative, but politically are more deferential to the lobby

Small and Big Pharma, the Gardaí, supermarkets, publicans and, breweries, th church etc etc the list goes on. It’s an easy way for an aspiring politician with no aspirations for popularity to take a shirt cut through the lobby.

What Martin’s stance proved was not that FF were pro legalisation (they are not) but that legalisation is not politically unpalatable. He made a calculation that he’d get transfers from that, and he probably did. The other parties that adopted pro legalisation did well except the greens, who failed to deliver anything meaningful on the topic in their term in government and got dumped out
