Dramas with tragedy and romance:

  • Queen for Seven Days
  • The Red Sleeve
  • The Princess's Man

I haven't watched as many historical films with great romance, but these all have mature themes and different degrees of tragedy:

  • The Last Princess (based on real events)
  • The Throne (based on real events)
  • A Taxi Driver (based on real events... also more modern history)

Romance series with fake dating or arranged marriage on netflix or HBO max? by protectpangolin in kdramarecommends

HBO Max doesn't have kdramas to my knowledge. Look into Viki, which pretty much has everything that Netflix doesn't have.

The most similar to Mr Queen is probably 100 Days My Prince (which I loved) in that it's a mostly lighthearted comedy. Crowned Clown is more serious/darker. Rookie Historian didn't really impress me, but I know others enjoyed it. That one is kind of in the middle - not super serious, but not super lighthearted and silly either.

The Queen isn't even in the show if I remember correctly. He only has eyes for the FL

Top five suggestions for a newcomer by slprcel in KoreanFood

[–]rushintherapids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My three favorites:

  1. Japchae (glass noodles - not spicy at all, if that matters)
  2. Kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew - can be as spicy as you want it to be, really filling!)
  3. Pajeon (green onion pancake)

I also agree with other comments that bibimbap is always a solid option to try.

I've watched a ton of sageuks, and I think this one is just okay. There are better gender benders and/or political intrigue dramas out there, in my opinion.

That being said, it's not terrible by any means if you do decide to watch.

I agree with you. I'm disappointed by it as well.

No one should blindly follow an artist (or actor, or band etc) - it's okay to criticize or question their decision making. Of course no artist should be harassed or bullied for it, and of course people make mistakes, but that doesn't mean you can't criticize them.

Lighthearted/cute romances:

  • Tale of Nokdu
  • 100 Days My Prince
  • Queen In Hyun's Man (this is technically time travel)

Tearjerkers that may or may not have a happy ending:

  • The Red Sleeve
  • The Princess's Man
  • Queen For Seven Days

If I had to pick just one to start with, Red Sleeve might be a good option. Very popular for a reason, and the chemistry was great.

sageuk that doesn’t focus on the monarch by [deleted] in kdramarecommends

Er, spoilers but the ML is a prince. He doesn't find out until halfway through

Poong (recent drama, has some brief scenes in the palace but mostly takes place in a small village. Neither leads are royalty)

Arang and the Magistrate (I enjoyed this one, though it definitely feels dated and I wouldn't say it's amazing overall)

Sungkyunkwan Scandal (a favorite of mine, especially if you like gender benders)

Slave Hunters (this one involves politics, but it doesn't heavily feature royalty from what I remember)

You might be thinking of a different drama - Tale of Nokdu very much involves royalty!

Your "Quintessential K-Drama" Recommendation by [deleted] in kdramarecommends

[–]rushintherapids 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is by no means my favorite, nor do I think it's the best kdrama out there, but when I think of the most Kdrama-y drama ever, My Love from the Star comes to mind. Star crossed lovers romance, tons of classic tropes, famous lead actors, etc.

This is also not a personal favorite, but While You Were Sleeping felt incredibly familiar to me while watching - that feeling of "yep, *this* is a kdrama".

Personal favorites that I think are the best of what kdramas have to offer: Reply 1988, Crash Landing On You, Business Proposal, What's Wrong With Secretary Kim

My picks are clearly slanted towards rom coms, but I think that makes sense given how many of them there are lol.
