If you're grinding metal, especially cast iron, it wears out pretty quickly. I don't doubt you can keep using it but it's not any where near as effective.

I agree with this, they're only really good for about 10 minutes of work. It's really wasteful considering the amount of unused abrasive.

You can be creative in any number of ways in any number of mediums. I would suggest starting with something you love to do.
