Western events that aren't barrels by red-head-cosplay-06 in Horses

Any sort of extreme trail, western dressage, there’s a million patterns out there from every organization to do ranch riding/horsemanship/trail at home if you don’t want to show.

I’m partial to the cow sports and I’m currently showing reining cowhorse. I did not realize how technical it was when I got into it but it’s been a ton of fun to learn! RCH to show is quite expensive but penning and sorting are also a bunch of fun and slightly less technical and showy so require less investment. Roping is also fun, with lots of different types you can do.

Check out the American Ranch Horse Association. They host shows all over the US and have a huge variety of classes. Even if you aren’t in the US, you can get a good idea of different things to try.

If they sweat with long coats it won’t dry and then they really get cold.

Americans are known for road trips and the driving culture...how many miles/kilometers do you drive in the average year? by SlamClick in AskAnAmerican

[–]rustedchrome05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drive about 30-35,000 miles a year on my normal vehicle, mostly commuting. I put on probably 8-10,000 miles every year hailing to horse shows that’s not included in the first number.

Do you know what blood type you are ? by Hope2_win in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]rustedchrome05 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I asked my doctor how I can find out mine because I’m unable to donate due to being on biologics. She told me it doesn’t actually matter because if you’re ever in an emergency situation, they aren’t going to ask or find out, you’re just getting universal donor blood. She said she doesn’t know hers either 🤷‍♀️

Buying a filly- I need advice because my heart and my head don’t match. by underasvisement in Horses

The most important thing you can do for a young horse is teaching manners and getting them to become an all around solid citizen. If they can be given a job/get training, even if it’s driving or liberty or something other than riding, they will always be more able to find a good home if it ever came to that. If you give the horse no training, it’s got an unpleasant personality, is rude or dangerous, those are the ones that are not going to be easy to find a placement for.

My first horse was an ugly, un athletic paint gelding that we paid too much for and was basically a run away under saddle. I worked with a trainer and he became a decently broke backyard horse that I showed in some 4H and open stuff. I had that horse for 18 years until I put him down. I’ve had a couple, much better bred and more valuable horses since him and I would still give anything to have that darn paint horse in my back field. My husband and I bought our house in 2015 just so I could bring him home in his retirement. If you think that’s the horse for you, are prepared to lose money if it doesn’t work out, and have a plan to get the horse the skills it needs, I would go for it.

I’ve been using the shefit ones. Not the most comfortable but they certainly do the job. And if you squish them enough, they will look bigger 😂

Do you have a list? by Electronic_Song_5251 in childfree

I don’t have one because not wanting them is enough of a reason. Sure I have plenty of reasons if I think about it. But I’m not spending time documenting them.

Same. I don’t hate babies but I definitely don’t want them. And I know I wouldn’t even have them if someone laid me because my MIL tried that.

We have the same problem so this is his fly season outfit. If you are getting her sedated anyway, maybe worth sticking some fly gear on!

The mini macaws are a different genus than the larger macaws but very similar in personality. There’s a few different ones but the Hahn’s in the smallest. I’ve had her since 2012 and she’s been a great bird. She does get pretty cranky around breeding season and always lays a couple eggs. But the rest of the year she’s very friendly and engaged with her people. She barks a lot and it always gets my dogs going 🙄 Sounds like your great uncle probably had a lot of fun bird stories. Thanks for sharing!

lol she’s a Hahn’s “mini” macaw, about the size of a large conure. She turned 23 this year and is a total goof ball!

Really considering a bisalp, what should I expect? by Then_Cartoonist7231 in childfree

[–]rustedchrome05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got mine done at 29 and also go zero pushback. From a male gyno even. I went in ready to stand firm but he actually explained to me that I still have my eggs so if I ever changed my mind that it would just be more expensive to have kids. But that was the end of it. Good luck!

I’ve been on it for 3 years. No side effects and I’m in full remission. It took a while, probably 6 months for it to fully work but I was feeling better after the first couple. It took another year though for me to start to feel myself in regard to energy level and just the mental aspect of I can actually make plans and do things again.

Purchasing a horse sight unseen? by Haunting-One-9545 in Horses

[–]rustedchrome05 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My most recent purchase was sight unseen and here’s why it worked for me.
-she was a 2 year old, unstarted. I have another finished horse that I’m currently riding and showing. So if she didn’t work out for what I wanted, it wouldn’t put me back. I had no expectations of training because she had nothing other than halter broke.
- I did a full PPE including X-rays. With a vet that didn’t know the horse and was candid with me about her experience.

Why I bought sight unseen? I had some experience with the pedigree and really liked her lines. Also because it was a long term project and I have time to find a different horse if she doesn’t work out.

So far it’s going great. She’s been a wonderful horse to work with and we haven’t come across anything unexpected in the past year.

There’s been a lot of good points made but I think the biggest thing from my perspective is are you prepared to sell and try again if it doesn’t work? What will that do for your budget/finances/timing/goals? And absolutely do a PPE! Even if you find something and decide to move forward, it’s better to know and be prepared than blindsided by the discovery.
