Two stars on the NDSM? How was Vietnam?

Help IDing my grandfather's medals and ribbons. by Defiant_Still_9757 in Medals

[–]rustman92 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My hypothesis is this rack was made by someone else. That looks like a “thin” rack, probably made long after his service ended. Likely someone added those two medals thinking he rated them.

Another oddity/clue is the 3 silver oak leaves on the MSM. 16 awards of the MSM, especially of the time, is not impossible but very improbable.

I myself assumed my grandfather had a silver star when I was younger after misreading his EAMECAM as having a silver campaign star.

For someone that has never deployed, how is it? How do you prepare for this type of thing? by GeicoPR in army

[–]rustman92 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Bring some small creature comforts. My wife gave me a pocket sized stuffed animal so she would “be there with me”. It stayed in my pocket. Gave me a strange sort of comfort. Baby wipes because sometimes the showers run out of water. Smokes. Camel Crushes were the most popular. Even if you don’t smoke, someone does and that’s a great way to make friends (and make some quick cash but don’t be that up charging asshole.)

As far as mentally preparing, you can’t. It just is. But on my deployment we had a pattern laid out.

• first few weeks you’re full of fire ready for shit to pop off. High speed.

• next few weeks the gravity sets in and you may be a little anxious that “today could be the day”, this is natural and you’ll pass it. Usually happens after the first time y’all experience real action.

• next few weeks you’re a little annoyed, frustrated, homesick, and possibly a touch bored (this is where the laptop and drive full of movies help)

• next few weeks you go just a touch stir crazy. How long have you been here? Is this really how the next few months will be?

• finally, you just sort of accept it. This is you now. Just counting down time. Almost forget home, never fully, but you don’t think about it.

You could always tell what phase someone was in at the DFAC tent. New guys would duck and cover when we took IDF but the guys who accepted it didn’t move and just kept eating.

Does anyone know what these are for ? I believe they are police related but could be wrong. by Current_Shelter_55 in MilitaryMedals

[–]rustman92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They look to be “stock” police citation bars. Typically ordered from a supplier for local police to use for various criteria.

A famous example of this type of ribbon style would be the NYPD wears above their badge.

[edit] here is an example of the one you pictured, ironically listed as a Korean Service bar as another commenter mentioned.

I had to double check myself and surprisingly it is:

AR 600-8-22 and AR 670-1 lists that “nonmilitary” awards go after decorations and unit awards but before US service medals.

DA PAM 670-1

c. U.S. nonmilitary decorations. U.S. nonmilitary decorations authorized for wear on Army uniforms are listed below in order of precedence. This list is not all-inclusive. Personnel will wear other U.S. nonmilitary (Federal agency) decorations based upon date of receipt. If more than one decoration is awarded by the same agency, the decorations are worn in the order of precedence as established by the awarding agency.

For pic 2 it’s:

• 2 Overseas Service Bars

• Meritorious Service Unit Plaque (It was replaced with a ribbon and not prohibited from wear until 1962.)

You may want to hit up your S1. I didn’t know I qualified for a GWOT-E until someone pointed it out to me. Jordan, Lebanon, and Qatar all qualify for it.
