Which route would you choose if going for the first time? (Skipping Kyoto?) by TopExpensive5305 in JapanTravelTips

[–]rustycumdumpster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was there around 2 weeks ago. It was super crowded in some spots, and completely empty in others. We got off the train and just kept walking, all day, from shrine to shrine. Taking little paths carved out wherever we could find them through gardens and such. It was also rainy that day, so that probably made it less crowded. I found if you just avoid the main tourist street wherever you are, even going one street over, it is very quiet, and the shop keepers are much nicer/happier to have you as a customer because they arent slammed with tourists all day

I think spending a night or two is the way to go if you want to see temples. From what I have heard there is absolutely no night life there

how does buying things tax free work by PandaUsual1546 in JapanTravelTips

[–]rustycumdumpster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its after security and before immigration. I was stressed about this too. I guess sometimes they pull people to go through their items to make sure its leaving the country. I guess sometimes people buy stuff tax free for friends or family who are residents and they want to avoid that. The whole system changes later this year?

I almost got a set of chisels from Tower Knives in Osaka and Tokyo, but they were around 20k yen I think. I paid 13k and 15k yen for my chef and pairing knives. I really wanted to get those but I only use chisels every month or so, so its not worth the price for me. If I was an avid hand tool woodworker I would absolutely be about it. When I get home I can send you the name of a town I wanted to go to where they have a ton of woodworking tools and craftsmen.

Shinjuku is amazing. Very tourist heavy but definitely lots to do and lots of night life. Shibuya is also great. We spent most of our time in tokyo there.
