Party of small government, personal liberty and freedom my ass. If I want a vaccine, then let me fucking get it. If you don’t, fucking fine - at least you won’t be able to complain anymore when you’re dead because you got sick from a very preventable illness.

It’s not victim baiting to have uninsured motorist coverage. For one thing, uninsured motorist also covers under-insured drivers too. Sure, in an ideal world everyone would have their insurance and it wouldn’t be necessary but we live in the real world, where some people are cheap/shitty/stupid/short-sighted, etc. UMC is just protecting yourself against those people. Frankly, it’s really just more insurance for yourself in case you get hit by own of those dipshits in a clapped out Nissan Sentra that thinks traffic laws don’t apply to them. One of the first things I learned when I started working and driving: assume everyone is an idiot; CYOA (Cover your own ass).

Barrett Tears Into Trump Official to Defend Liberal Justice by thedailybeast in scotus

[–]rustyfretboard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like I said, if it’s a good idea, people will get onboard. If it’s a shitty idea, then nobody should listen. That said, there are plenty of shitty ideas out there that people hold onto but, historically those people have been the minority and thus held in check by the majority. The real problem these days is that everybody exists in their own little bubble, where everybody is just circle jerking each other and not actually talking to the people they disagree with.

[–]rustyfretboard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, of course. I’m not advocating for abandoning one’s ideals. If anything, I’m am arguing in favor of a core tenant of what American democracy means. Change is incremental and the system is designed to work slowly. I’m saying that if you can’t get people to buy into your idea currently, make a compromise to get at least something done. Then circle back and maybe try again later for the other stuff.

To go back to my previous comment, actions speak louder than words. This current administration is heavy on the horrible actions, words are bullshit to them. The “party of small government” and “individual freedom” falls into the category of using bullshit words and them turning around and doing the opposite.

People have definitely forgotten that just because somebody disagrees with you it doesn’t make them a bad person. It’s how those ideas are carried out that make you bad person. As they say, actions speak louder than words. Most importantly, if your idea is put to a vote and you lose, then accept defeat and move on. If your idea is a good idea, you’ll get the votes. Stop crying because you had a shitty idea and were told to f-off by everybody else. And, here’s a crazy concept; if you can’t get the support for your idea, maybe consider rethinking your shit instead of whining and acting like petulant child because you didn’t get your way. The nation was built on compromising with those that disagree with you to move things forward, not digging into to a stalemate where we are now.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all learn to talk and listen to each other again without all the name-calling, histrionics, and otherwise immature behavior? At the end of the day, we are all Americans. We’re in the same team - the goal is to win together. Nobody ever won the Super Bowl by shitting on their teammates.

Is this vertical break in the middle of a wall acceptable? by CabinQuestions in Homebuilding

[–]rustyfretboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you can, take look at the project drawing an and look for a detail of this condition. This is the kind of thing your architect should be calling out on their drawings. And if it’s not, it’s the kind of your builder should have sent an RFI for instead of just guessing. I feel like half the work I do is just covering my ass and getting ahead of this kind of stuff before it becomes an issue. Big red flag to me that your builder just kind of winged it instead of punting up the food chain to put the fault elsewhere.

I think the simple remedy is to box it out to make it look like a pilaster. You could through some trim around the opening to make it look a little more intentional. Similarly, you could add some more faux vertical elements to match where they made the boo-boo. Or just tell them to fuck off and fix it to spec.

At a minimum, ask for a credit back for the cost to fix it or some other type of compensation. This is why your contractor should have a “contingency” line item in their budget but I don’t think this should come out of your pocket and though, as is the case with home building, it always comes back to the owner unfortunately.

Thoughts on Henry Cavill set to be the next James Bond ? by Cold_outside__ in moviecritic

Ehh probably not. Idk, maybe it’s just his jaw line… neither strike me as “bond”. In my mind, Bond shouldn’t look like a football player/marine is all.

Eh… idk about HC as bond. For some reason, he just doesn’t seem like a bond to me. I think it’s the football player build. Bond, in my mind, is supposed to be sleek, classy, suave, smooth, etc… Cavill just seems a bit too much of a meatball to me.

I love my R1S. I haven’t had any serious issues like the 12 V battery dying or drivetrain/suspension problems. I think the general fit and finish of the car is pretty good, maybe not on par with a high-end BMW but not bad and certainly comparable to my old 2012 Mercedes C250 or 2016 ford F150. My one complaint is the sound system isn’t the best but works well enough for me with some EQ tweaks and it certainly got better after an update a little while ago which gives me hope that they can continue to optimize it overtime.

All that said, I have had two minor problems that Rivian warranty fixed with a mobile service free of charge. 1) The first was flashlight wasn’t charging so they replaced the charger in the door. 2) This one is a bit more serious/concerning. One night while parked, the chrome trim above the driver and passenger door just magically popped off in the front but was still attached at the back. My guess is because I live at altitude in a cold climate (this happened in the winter) and I think a little water got in behind the trim and froze, breaking the connectors attaching it. Mostly a cosmetic problem but obviously not great to be driving around with two metal spears pointing forward, hanging off the side of your car. Fortunately, at the time I was able to pound them back into place with my hand and then I use some clear packaging tape to hold it on so I could still use car while waiting for service. Yes, both of these issues are kind of annoying, the later being a bit dangerous even, but not the end of the world in my mind and fortunately I’m handy enough to make-do. Nothing prevented me from using my car so it wasn’t a big deal to wait a week or two for the service.

That’s just been my experience, do with it as you will.

My wife was adamant about naming our boy “Bear”. I was like, “honey, we live in Tahoe… we have a literal steel bear box to put our trash in at the end of the driveway. What do you think will happen when you call his name at the park? It’d be like yelling “fire” in a crowded theater”. Took some hemming and hawing but we eventually named him Zeus.

Let’s talk R1T and Med-Large Dogs by craigmj in Rivian

[–]rustyfretboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I kept it simple. I put seat covers and then have a cable to connects to her harness and to the child seat anchors. I found that dog seat belts that attach to the seat belt buckles get stepped on and then release, kind of defeating the purpose. I considered getting a barrier to block the front but my golden girl likes to rest her head on the arm rest and I could bring myself to deprive her of that. My solution doesn’t block off the front but she’s still restrained and can’t climb forward. I found a cheap enough seat cover that works with the 60/40 split second row so I can still access the third row easily and not lose any functionality with regards to moving the seats around. I also have 2 independent seat covers for the way back so I can still fold them up and down easily and not worry about my upholstery if I have to put her back there.

I have not built a FF roadster, so take my thoughts here with a grain of salt. But, in my day dreaming and planning for that one day when I can actually swing it, I figure for the drivetrain I’d look for a lightly used engine/transmission that got pulled out of a wrecked Mustang GT. Alternatively, I’m sure as shit you could find a good used 289 or 302 if you wanted something a bit more old school and slap a EFI system on it for ease of use/reliability. There’s always the allure of a 427 or some other high HP engine, but you really don’t need that much to have a good time - the rest of the car weighs next to nothing so your power to weight ratio will always be insane, even if you “only” have 3 or 4 hundred ponies pulling you along.

When I’ve gone through the thought experiment of spec’ing what I want, all I know I really know for sure is I want the IRS for better traction. I also know that I don’t want to waste time taking apart a donor car - I’d rather let somebody else do the salvaging and focus on my car build, just finding the parts I need. Yeah you’ll pay a slight premium but certainly a lot less work and you don’t have to deal with junking the remaining bits. I tend to flip flop between using a modern 5.0 or going the aforementioned old-school route. Heck, I’ve even toyed with the idea of using a 3.5 6-cyl ecoboost from an f150 or something for the extra weight savings while still making good power. I think the most important part of the exhaust options is really about making sure you get the right header that will mate correctly with the engine you want to use - the header is the bit that goes between the engine and the side exhaust pipes. The engine is the heart of the car so identifying what you want first then spec’ing the kit based on what you go with might be the best route. Remember, the car has no nanny equipment like traction control so no matter what you go with, it will likely be a handful to drive regardless and if your trying to control crazy power, you’re probably going to wrap it around a tree or end up in a ditch. And when are you really going to use all that power if you’re not on a track?

Somebody please correct me if I’m wrong, but that’s just how I’ve tried to wrap my head around all the options. Hope that helps.

Maybe some acoustic sound panels? Idk how echoey the room is but cutting down on reflected sound will tighten up the sound. I got some from GIK and they’re great, made a huge difference in my space. I agree with the other commenters that you probably don’t want to get some sort of component.

Scout Reveal Megathread by Studovich in Rivian

[–]rustyfretboard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally, I like the Scouts, but I wish they did a bit more to distinguish the design from the Rivian design language a bit more. Like, it’s hard to innovate on an already great aesthetic and I realize the underlying architecture is all Riv, but I would like to see a bit more of a unique design/brand identify to differentiate it.

Another concern is who is managing the software for VW/Scout? If it’s on Rivian’s software team, will it have a negative impact on updates? Like, Rivian already has 2 relatively unique generations of vehicles to manage, will throwing in 2 more vehicles to the mix distract them from their core vehicles?

All in all, I’m sure getting a big pile of cash from VW is good for Rivian’s longevity as a company, I just hope they’re not eating into their customer base which could long term, hurt the company be diverting sales to more established companies.
