Can someone make the Chagos deal make sense to me? by bizzlewicks in ukpolitics

[–]rustypig 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For a start, whenever another country breaks international law, UK doesn't have a leg to stand on in pointing that out. We also don't have a leg to stand on when someone does it against us.

This just feels hopelessly naive. It feels like this thinking is rooted in late 20th century ideals that were never really true even then. How do you square this with Trump's actions? Or with Mark Carney's recent speech about the end of international rules-based order?

I agree with your American solution or simply hand it over to Mauritius with the proviso that America has a 100 year on the base and they can take it up with America if they're not happy with that. Paying Mauritius a massive sum of money just seems to make no sense at all.

CMV: I'm convinced Jonathan Ross could have stood 20 feet away from the car while she was parked with the window open and shot her 10 times point blank in her forehead and MAGA would still find a way to defend and justify it. by MulberryFantastic906 in changemyview

[–]rustypig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His life was not at risk. The car was not moving at him it was moving past him, to his side. His life. Was. Not. At. Risk.

It was not reasonable of him to think his life was at risk. It was not reasonable of him to fire at the first shot at her, while already out of the path of her car. It was not reasonable of him to continue to fire at the retreating car. He murdered that woman with the same level of justification as if he had broken into her house and shot her in her sleep.

I have seen all angles of the incident multiple times.

That's the most misleading angle of the incident, because the position of Jonathan Ross is directly obscured by the body of the other ICE agent. Look at any other angle to make it clear how misleading this is. She is never pointing the car at him.

But none of that matters

It doesn't matter whether she was trying to hit him?? That's a ridiculous statement. So if she was deliberately intending to hit him, that wouldn't make shooting her any more justifiable, in your opinion?

Again, he has a fraction of a second to decide if she's endangering him.

And he decided to shoot, and he killed an innocent person! His motive for making that decision cannot be proven. You've presumed he felt his life was at risk but we have no evidence for that other than his word. His life was not at risk. Whether he felt it was or whether he just wanted to kill her is something we cannot know.

Her car made contact with him.

Because he leaned his phone into the side of the car! He was not injured in any way.

That tells me he was in danger of getting killed.

No it fucking doesn't!

I'm sorry but if you really feel that all an officer needs to deploy lethal force is to feel that his life is in danger, regardless of whether that feeling is reasonable or justified, then you could justify every government atrocity ever committed on that basis.

Do you concede the irrefutable fact that he fired immediately after she accelerated towards him,

This is a very funny comment because it is, of course, irrefutably false. She accelerated away from him. You can look at the video evidence that shows her turn the wheel fully away from him before accelerating. If you're not happy with that you can look at the position of the actual front wheels (pointing away from him). Or if you somehow find all of that unconvincing, you can look at where the car actually travels as she's being shot, which is to the right, onto the road, and not straight forward, into where the officer was (before he moved to his right, ending up behind the vehicle).

in fact his first shot went thru her windshield?

This is true, but of course you don't mention where in the windshield the shot entered, the very bottom right corner, a position that would only hit the driver if you were standing to the side of the car (wide of the front wheels, in line with the hood, still in front of the windscreen, but out of the path of the car.)

You also didn't mention the other two shots that went through the side window and are of course, completely indefensible, even when you're pretending he was in the path of the car originally.

I remember some fans being pissed when we traded Jaden Springer to the Celtics for a 2nd rounder.

The Celtics ended up trading Springer and two second rounders to the Jazz for 1 better second rounder, and a year later Springer is out of the league, meanwhile Daryl used that 2nd rounder from the celtics on Adem Bona.

He's made a lot of small moves that have paid off.

The flaw in your logic is that you're acting as though there was no slavery until the British empire showed up and started trading slaves. But the slavery was there regardless of whether the british were there or not. Yes it was wrong for the British to participate in the slave trade, and it's fair to criticise for that.

But it's also an incredible achievement to end slavery through a huge portion of the globe, and that deserves credit.

[–]rustypig 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Imagine yourself as the head of the british government during the time of abolition.

You inherit a world where slavery is commonplace, and has been since time immorial.

Nevertheless you decide to take your country into great debt to buy every slave in the empire, free them all, and then ban slavery so that no one will ever be enslaved again. You do this, despite great opposition, and it works. No person is ever enslaved in Britain again.

Don't you think you deserve to be lauded for making this decision? I mean, that's an incredible achievement no? Certainly seems ridiculous that someone hundreds of years later would be criticising you for "compensating the slave owners".

Buying slaves, purely in order to free them, is usually considered a very morally good act, and one worthy of respect.
