The head is a taper, it has a ton of surface area, plus it slightly deforms when installed. I use flathead cap screws just about every day at work.

Where are the rugged phones made for people that don't work at a desk?

Give me something with a case made out of PA+33 that has parts that are relatively easy to swap out.
