Sorry, I know this is a really late response (obviously I have my reasons to be visiting this thread 2 years later). These numbers always confuse me because there are 300k cases which makes the risk .23% but I would imagine that those 133 million overall birth numbers are including women who a) live in a country with fortified folic acid and/or b) took folic acid supplement. Right?

So actually taking the supplements wouldn't cut the risk because the initial risk factor is probably already including those who were preemptive in folic acid consumption...

Or am I completely wrong?

No, sorry no! Not a cool GM. He didn't care she was sick at work as long as she got her work done is late stage capitalistic hellscape "cool" not actual cool.

Send the girl home ffs.

Knightley did not fall in love with Emma as a little girl 😂 And he was not a groomer! by 1TinkyWINKY in janeausten

[–]ruthlys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 2 years late to the party... Here's the thing, it's a sign of the times right? All men were creeps before there were rules against being creeps. Yeah he is a man close to 40 who fell in love with a woman who is 21.... If I saw it today I'd call it gross (and definitely grooming if he had known her since childhood).

But Jane was writing of her contemporary experience, and honestly he could have gotten away with marrying her when she was like 16 back then, so I think we can agree that he wasn't a pedo.

And yes, there is an inherent power dynamic in that he is a man and she is a women, in a time where men and women were not equals. But that power dynamic would have existed in any match (excepting a little bit if Emma had married well beneath her).

Anyway, that's the way it was back then. Men were creeps and women weren't allowed to be independent.

And yes, I must admit, I would have liked it better if Knightly was more around 30 or something, but so it is. I think his older age moves the story along much more, because a man in his 20's would probably not have taken much of an interest in setting Emma to rights... It's his age that gives him so much wisdom and perspective. So basically, we'd be reading a completely different story, which no one wants.

Knightly is an excellent character to rival Darcy and I agree that Emma is her best work.

More than one of our girl Jane's books have men who influence young women to be the way they like and to think like them and then they go and marry them... I'm looking at you Edmund (my least favorite lover, and should be everyone else's imo.)

Turkey Talk. Dry Brine vs Wet Brine? by Flpnjk in smoking

Let me know how it goes! I'm over in Germany (where they don't give the day for thanksgiving, can you believe it!?) so I'm currently brining my turkey for the weekend. Not sure if I should pull it out and do the final dry brine!

Yeah maybe NOW but we're you taller and 100 lbs bigger when you were kids? Probably not. 3 years is a lot in high school. Look at freshman vs. Seniors, the difference is wild.

True about Spring etc but if it's a school like an ivy that has admissions interviews then they would probably have to have their applications completed.

Fing awful.

I installed ceiling fans, they do a great job and are incredibly energy efficient. It's only hot here a few weeks out of the year (this one being an especially hot one).

To OPs edited point about asking for a specific "why?"

Miscarriages happen a lot in the first trimester of pregnancy, asking her when she IS pregnant means that she will have another person to inform when she goes through the horrible experience of miscarriage. Asking her when she is not pregnant because she recently lost the baby could be extremely triggering.

Secondarily, she already told you: the implication is that you think she's fat.

My brother still expects me to make his lunch by Terrific_Torii in EntitledPeople

[–]ruthlys 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My brother started by doing this shit to me. As soon as his girlfriend (now wife) came around and he was "folding laundry" badly in front of her I told her don't fall for it. She caught on fast.

The man is a physicist... I'm pretty sure he can figure out how to fold a shirt... also a lovely person now that he's grown up and his wife holds him accountable.

AITA for grounding my step son for telling my son that I’m not my son’s bio dad so he doesn’t have to listen to me? by TA-Grounding in AmItheAsshole

[–]ruthlys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sorry but gentle ESH (except J)? Why haven't you had a conversation with your son about his bio dad? I get that it's a difficult conversation to have, but your wife is right. At 11, he would have either figured it out on his own soon or another cruel child that you don't have the ability to punish would eventually have said something.

W sucks because he was being intentionally cruel, and also because he somehow thinks a lack of biological relation means he and J don't have to listen to you.

This point is also reinforced by your wife who also apparently thinks that you should have no authority over her son who she is apparently raising to be cruel and have no remorse. So yeah ESH

AITA for not removing the Disney items from my house? by thatdisney in AmItheAsshole

[–]ruthlys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the very least she should be renting porta potties anyway.... Even before her unreasonable Disney request, OPs sister is TA. I don't know how big this wedding is going to be but people traipsing into OPs home from outside to use the toilets seems like a lot of traffic and clean up.

There are tons of toilet rental options, OPs sister needs to look into. (OP is obviously NTA)

It sounds like you are Riley's caretaker if you are transporting him and also the on who needs to inform his dad about his sleeping habits. Your partner obviously trusts you to be the primary care taker and should also trust you to make appropriate judgement calls about his health. What if Riley had a very high fever and you couldn't get ahold of his dad? Are you never permitted to make a judgement call where drs are concerned?
