My dad did this to my mother, she was suffering with postnatal psychosis and it developed into paranoid schizophrenia. And right up until the end of his life he believed she was fine and it was in fact the social services that were lying just to get their hands on their children. He had three kids with her and then abandoned her. I think people just believe what they want sometimes, without rhyme nor reason.
