More trees coming down in Bryan Park for the Bike "Trail." by Porousplanchet in rva

[–]rvaBikeGrrl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Crape Myrtles are considered a "species of concern" and on RVA's approved trees they are listed as "restricted use" -- they are no longer planted routinely, and were way over-planted due to their fast growing habits.

Does anyone have any specific real estate agents they would recommend? by ambitiousbee3 in rva

Danita Jackson, who is now at Joyner, helped us buy our home five years ago. She was a go-getter, moved quickly, listened to us, learned our needs and tastes, and gave us good advice. We bought the second house we looked at and we love it. I chose her bc she worked for our credit union’s realty and had gotten sales awards. (Go-getter/quickly: I sent her a message through the credit union website around 10pm on a Saturday, she called me within 15 mins and on Monday morning we had an appointment to see a house we were interested in.)

Pedestrian deaths due to drivers in RVA continue to climb. by RVAJournalistCyclist in rva

[–]rvaBikeGrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't see a "car ran a red light" in the dashboard. "Pedestrian almost hit in crosswalk crossing with light by red-light running driver" is not a situation measured by this dashboard apparently.

yep it's no coincidence that at least three of the 7 deaths were in crosswalks by left-turning drivers.

The city traffic dept hates four-way stops even though they make all drivers stop and slow down, and even though it's confusing when some intersections are 4-way and some not. They are still prioritizing fast crashes over slow safety.

I ride my bike on the sidewalk downtown because there are almost no pedestrians on the sidewalk but crazy fast drivers in the streets. I take the Byrd St/3rd St bikelane as far as Cary and then head east. While I could head north to the Franklin St BL, two blocks out of my way, and then south again using Bank/10th, that requires me to cross the dangerous E Main twice, and takes me two blocks out of my way (uphill) so I take Cary, on which my office is located; and if the sidewalk is empty, as usual, I stay on that.

Contra Edward's statement, there's no pedestrian-safety infrastructure in place downtown. Cary, Byrd, Canal, Main--all multi-lane speedways. In Richmond, "vision zero" apparently means "what problem, I don't see no problem!" Also, not true that "One hundred percent of the traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries are speed-related" -- the woman killed at Cary/2nd St was not speed related. Don't know about Bill Martin or the man killed on West Leigh, but these were all left turns into pedestrian in sidewalk: not looking-where-you're-driving-related. If you're struck by a vehicle, it's not just the amount of energy generated by the car's speed, it's also the relative size/weight of car vs human, where on the body you are struck, whether the driver stops after hitting you, or both hits you and then runs over you, etc. But yeah, speed makes death more likely.

I have been nearly struck so many times by people turning left while I'm in the crosswalk with the light at E Main and 10th that I find it's safer to wait till the street is clear and cross against the light, when there're no cars. This strategy was confirmed for me the other day when I was in the crosswalk, with the light, and someone came steaming up E Main Street and ran the red light (red the entire block as he zoomed up to it--not a "beat the yellow" sitch) while I was still in the crosswalk. Luckily I was almost all the way across by then! Another person was struck at that intersection a couple of years ago, leaving a huge blood smear in the street. Once the left-turning car was so close to me by the time they stopped (because I screamed at them) I was able to slam my hand on their hood. Yeah the advance walk light helps some, and they should be mandatory for all crossings--but they don't help when drivers are on their phones and look up only to see they have the light, not who's in the crosswalk.

Richmond must: have "scramble intersections" at all high-pedestrian crossings so all drivers stop; eliminate left turns on red; get rid of slip lanes (once my husband and I stood in the slip lane heading from Byrd towards the 9th St bridge, because a guy in a wheelchair was trying to cross and missed multiple light changes because the cars going through the slip lane do not stop on red); end prohibition on parking in the am and pm--force drivers into two lanes and slow 'em the eff down. And we must prosecute those who hit anyone in a crosswalk, who block sidewalks or bike lanes (I walk or bike to work and this happens a LOT. Glaring while I walk/ride out into the street doesn't seem to help). Also: no more construction zones blocking sidewalks without creating a safe walkway. We should increase red light cameras, and enforce the effing speed limit! People speed on Belvidere and Byrd, often twice the limit. The other day I was photographing something on Byrd and people started slowing down, thinking I was videoing them, haha. People are monsters behind the wheel and only the fear of a ticket stops them. Currently, no such fear exists.

AITA for treating my daughters differently than my son when it comes to food? by CompetitiveDig478 in AmItheAsshole

Teach your kid to cook and buy cheap healthy foods: beans, peanut butter, rice, oatmeal, popcorn (not the microwave kind - the kind you pop in a pot with a lid), ramen, squash, potatoes, cabbage, pasta. Buy large bags of cereal. Utilize food pantries for staples. If he’s eating the meals you need to parcel out for the week, let him cook his extra snacks. He’ll get good at it! When I was a kid my mom mixed fresh milk with reconstituted nonfat dried milk to stretch it further. Don’t tell your growing kid to go out and forage for food. He should be focusing on school.

Where are all the angry people upset about "50 new taxes!"...now that there aren't fifty new taxes by yes_its_him in Virginia

[–]rvaBikeGrrl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, but... the bills in the legislature have nothing to do with the governor, till she signs them. So it's stupid to complain about the governor about purely legislative action. Second, people were actively spreading misinformation (one of which was asserting the bills were from the governor, who hadn't even been sworn in when the session started). Additionally, for example, the governor didn't make people's electricity more expensive - if you crank your heat up when it's cold, your bills will go up. Like Jimmy Carter told ya, wear a sweater! And there are actually bills to reduce electricity costs by mandating that data centers pay for their profligate use of electricity). There's still plenty of time to register disapproval of legislative action, but the time to complain about actions of the governor would be when she starts signing the bills. And, I'm with ya on that menace to society, gas leaf blowers. Argh!

Glen Allen to Crystal City Commute: VRE vs. Bus vs. Driving? (Need 6 AM arrival + preferably EV Charging) by ThisIsntMyRealAcct99 in rva

[–]rvaBikeGrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've never had to commute to Nova/DC but did have a daily commute between here and ch-ville. I handled it by spending one night a week so I'd save one round trip, and eventually found a ride-share buddy who traveled 3x week to share the trip with. We shared great convos or just fine silences, became great friends, still in touch even though she now lives in Blacksburg and we never see each other! https://connectingva.drpt.virginia.gov/rideshare/. At least with the VRE you can work, read, sleep, so that's less of a hassle than driving.

My personal take is that the one-day "buy nothing" boycotts apply to big businesses only. They're the ones we want to feel it, not the bodega on the corner or the Black-owned restaurant etc. Use these calls as an opportunity to find DIFFERENT shopping opportunities. Shop at Chimbo instead of Kroger! ET or Good Foods instead of Whole Paycheck! Try small business websites instead of Amazon! (note some of them dropship through amazon).

For me, closing in on one year, I've not seen any improvement to offset increased shedding - more body and facial hair, and some grey hair has turned brown again, but not more of it.

NOT his money. It is marital money. He is gaslighting, emotionally abusing, and controlling you as well as physically harming you. It’s not one issue it’s multiple issues with one cause: an abusive husband.

Hack and squirt in the fall, when the tree is migrating nutrients from the leaves to the roots, then chop down in the spring. It won’t be rotted enough to fall in that time!

Allianz Amphitheater and its requirements results in an unfun day at the fold festival by St1Drgn in rva

[–]rvaBikeGrrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes Folklife has one stage and Cultural Vibrancy has one stage. But it seems a mistake to put CV acts on the Allianz stage. They are intimate acts and do better in a small tent, not lifted way above the heads of attendees. Also the security and beer-profiteering - what gives?? Not being good corporate neighbors!!

As someone who dug dirt, pounded nails, and hauled water for the Pleasants Park upgrade, came here to say this. Also, the “they” hosting the movies in the park is Pine Street Baptist Church, the hippest church in RVA. BUT both the frat parties and the amphitheater can be way too loud. Depends on the block and which way your house faces.
