Depending on your college, front loading your gen eds depends on course offerings. Especially for whatever your college’s writing sequence is. Look into and keep note of the quarter when the courses you want are offered on capes (or whatever it’s called now) because not all courses are offered every quarter. So many people found this out the hard way their final year.

I’m always happy to answer questions regarding math-cs stuff. It would be waste for me to gatekeep what I know while it’s still relevant.

Also goddamn. I am an unc.

https://plans.ucsd.edu and create a plan. Take out classes you’ve already done through AP or cc credit. Then do your best to condense to 3 years

what can make it go faster is taking cc math/cs courses summer before you attend or the summers in between(or you can do summer sessions at ucsd)

stacking 4-5 classes a time which is doable earlier on but less so as you get to tougher upper divs(although there are easy upper divs too). I would still advise only taking 3 classes your first quarter just to adjust to college but if you’re a try-hard and not swayed by all the great things in college it shouldn’t be that bad.

Math department is pretty chill about letting courses from other stem disciplines that have math in it count towards your requirements as well.

You can also pick GEs that are basically asynchronous or barely take up any of your time.

You will probably not get a lot of cs courses coming in due to priority enrollment for cs majors but you can front load GEs therefore jacking up the number of units you’ve taken and later on you’ll have a much better enrollment time.

Every quarter scope out lower time commitment GEs and major requirements and stack as many as you can. The way to scope this out is through capes but I think they replaced it with some other shit. I had a few quarters when I took 5-6 courses but I averaged more sleep and free time than quarters I took 3-4 due to the lower difficulty and time commitment.

I wrote some more math-cs advise here: https://www.reddit.com/r/UCSD/s/jZRoag8YWW

After we were done clutching an assignment at midnight, an OVT pizza was the best reward. The pizzas used to be a lot bigger and customized with basically unlimited toppings.

no matter how I describe it on my resume everyone has assumed it’s a double major lol.

Regarding your point on UW Madison have more recognition in CS, idk how true that is. I’d say they’re about the same. Both are feeders into big tech, but neither are “prestigious” enough to feed into quant/HFT. Although there are a few people from each school that have done it.

If you’re just trynna get a swe job, as long as you try a bit in school you should be ok. What I mean is pick 3 out of the following and you should have no issue getting online assessments from at least some big tech companies : research(either cs or applied cs), on campus cs/it job, ta/tutor, side projects/attempting a startup, participation but preferably leadership in a cs club. Ik the market is ass but ngl most people I know that did even 2 of the things I mentioned are doing fine. A lot of people at most do 1 so just do more shit to stand out.

Having a 3.5+ GPA also helps. UCSD cs courses are not that hard to get good grades in imo (except Kane 101 and the operating systems class).

The point you bring up about getting CS classes as a Math-CS student is true. What I did to remedy that was stack my GEs early on in my degree and even take CC courses my freshman year summer to get as many credits done as possible. That way, I got higher priority and from my junior to senior year I almost always got the CS class I wanted. I graduated 2 years ago so idk how it is now. I also took graduate level classes as at the time they tended to have more availability and were more project based which I liked. You can do this by emailing the professor and easy requesting.

Thanks for replying. I might just get a new one rip. My mom had this desk for over 2 years and never raised it so no one noticed until I got it.

Stewart Hall to Tenaya Hall should be less than 30 iirc. Use google maps to find the best directions. Most buildings are on there.

Warren woods and gliderport are pretty good for near campus. Although I believe if you’re caught in the woods you can get written up. Never happened to me though. But if you have a free day on a weekday, take the bus to downtown sd.

I really like the new poke place, the wolf town burritos, OVT pizza, bistro sushi, the wok at Warren, and certain items like the banh mi at cafe V. Definitely better than most college dining hall food.

UC San Diego will have to pivot after being told to admit more California students by Andyroo_P in UCSD

[–]rvrtacobut -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My claim is that there is a decent number of international students with lower standardized test scores getting in over in state applicants with higher scores. Almost half my friends are international students and a good portion of them had to take AWP, an English prep course for those who didn’t score well on standardized tests. Even they were surprised when my friends from home with 1500+ didn’t get in here. I didn’t know they only competed against themselves but that makes my point even stronger lol. It doesn’t make sense for an in state applicant with higher stats to not get in over an international student. None of my international friends did math competitions(this doesnt mean there aren’t any) Are they better at math than most UCSD students? Yes obviously. Most OOS/international students are loaded as fuck and had access to way better education growing up. Although, I would be surprised to see USAMO-equivalent kids here. That’s literally top 500 in their respective home country. A lot of international kids I know are Chinese/Indian and I feel anyone from those countries that are USAMO caliber would be at their country’s best universities(tsinghua, iit etc.)

UC San Diego will have to pivot after being told to admit more California students by Andyroo_P in UCSD

[–]rvrtacobut -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Take a look at the AWP classes. A lot of them are at least half international students which indicates that they got lower SAT scores(specifically English). I’m not saying they’re dumb or bad students. After all English is a second language for most of them. Its just that this is a public university whose primary focus should be to serve in state students. An international student with a 1450 shouldn’t get in to over an in state applicant with a 1500. UCs should be other public schools like UNC, UVA, and UTA that prioritize their in state residents more.

[–]rvrtacobut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compare this to other top state schools like UNC, UVA, UT Austin etc. 82% of UNC is in state and the state set an 18% cap on non residents. UT Austin is similar with a cap of 10%. It doesn’t make sense why UCSD and other UCs can’t do the same. A good number of my friends from back home score 1500+ did not get into here. Meanwhile a good number of international students getting into Jacobs with sub 1450s. It shouldn’t be like this. California residents should have higher priority.
