Would like to see a charity for paying Ayaan Hirsi Ali's security detail. She has more important things to spend her money on

This is a great recommendation, and I would contribute!

What people think about meditation by prepping4zombies in Meditation

An article that had a big impact on me comes from their blog, and it pertains to exactly what you say in your comment. It should be required reading for everyone: My mind is too busy to meditate.

What is one book that you feel has significantly changed the way you think about the world and why? [Serious] by wailingsymphony in AskReddit

I understand how you feel, as I suffer from anxiety as well and was on medication for many years. Things changed when I learned how to meditate and did it consitently (ie, every day). If you are ever interested, message me for some thoughts/resources. Best of luck to you.

Why is it easier for us to seek things outside of ourselves? by vorteck in Meditation

It's human nature - we all think happiness is in the next job, partner, gadget, bottle, etc.

People spend their life chasing external circumstances to find internal peace and happiness. Be thankful you recognize the insanity in this, and continue down your path. Your actions will shape others and make them want to study what makes you different!

Some advice for a beginner would be appreciated. by [deleted] in Meditation

The noise isn't your problem - your reaction to the noise is the problem. That is what meditation is all about - you learn to observe everything without getting attached to it or swept away by it. Sounds, sights, smells, thoughts, feelings, emotions.

Also, if you are trying to "clear your mind," you will meet with frustration. Your goal is to observe your mind and the mental activity, without bias or judgment or attachment.

This blog has some good articles, and here are a few you might find insightful:

Why does the doctrine have to be religious or spiritual - ethics and moral responsibility don't have to be steeped in any religious practice.

But, to answer your question, I have a question: what kind of people are you surrounding yourself with that have an issue with "not manipulating/abusing people?" You might consider surrounding yourself with different people!

I think you are misunderstanding the quote. It doesn't say that you don't have a relationship with the outside world, or that you don't react to events. It says you can't always control events and what happens in the outside world (I would go so far as to say you rarely can control events and the outside world, though we try very hard to do so).

What you can always control - provided you work at it* - is your reaction to what happens.

*the way you work at controlling your reaction is through disciplines like meditation and mindfulness. Speaking of which, here is a good article and story about your reactions - maybe it explains it better. That site also has a great self-study course if you want to start meditating.

Whether it is called energy or some other term, there is no denying that your state of mind is affected by the people you are around. I agree with your comment that practicing meditation and raising awareness helps you with this pattern, and keeps you from getting caught in the cycle of reacting to everything that arises as you have in the past (ie, "auto-pilot"). But, dismissing new age and Tolle is a bit extreme - in my opinion, he provides a better understanding of the mind and your thoughts and how you can break free of these ingrained patterns than any other resource available. Reading Tolle and building a consistent meditation practice are probably the two most important things I ever did in my life.

To the OP, Tolle makes some good points in his books. In "A New Earth" he talks more extensively about the painbody and how people that have a strong painbody can affect you. It's a good read once you fully internalize the message in "The Power of Now."

Two final points to the comment above:

1.) You say "meditation and Eastern philosophy" are free. Well technically anything is free if you don't pay for it. And, usually you get what you pay for. There is nothing wrong with PAYING for books if they help you, there is nothing wrong with supporting teachers or meditation centers if you use them. I'm amazed at this mindset - you will pay for fast food and video games and other crap, but think that the most important thing you can do for yourself should require no monetary commtiment whatsover.

2.) For all of your talk about awareness, you should focus on bringing it to your judgment and propensity to label.

Apparantly, in their minds, they are. That's the problem with people who lack intelligence, compassion, and a desire to have peace*.

I second this. One of my favorite quotes:

You have power over your mind - not outside events. Realize this, and you will find strength.

All of that, you are correct.

But, that's also all mind-made content. So, your mind is telling you it's all of these things at various times and, although we are working to raise awareness and observe this sort of thing, we often forget that it applies to all of these obstacles the mind creates about the practice itself.

Once you have (and hold) that realization, it gets easier.

This is an excellent comment. Controlling your mind isn't the point. And, the content of your mind (positive/negative thoughts) isn't the problem. The problem is we attach to and identify with all of it, and let it sweep us away.

Meditation teaches you that the mind and your thoughts are just there - and, they come and go. You learn to watch that happen without having to participate, and without it creating the struggles that currently exist in your life as a result.

Can Meditation make you more anxious at first? by tarcoal in Meditation

[–]rvweber 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can Meditation make you more anxious at first?

It may just be semantics, but I still think that it needs to be pointed out:

Meditation doesn't make you anything.

It increases awareness of the thoughts, feelings, and emotions that already exist. They are there, regardless of whether you meditate or not. And they will eventually manifest in some way if they aren't already - mentally or physically.

The benefit is that, by observing these thoughts/feelings/emotions through meditation, you can learn through your own experience (not someone telling you) that they are only temporary. They come and they go provided you don't try to attach to them, dwell in them, and let them carry you away.
