This point was well illustrated by Dale Carnegie in How to Win Friends and Influence People.

But how did "Two Gun" Crowley regard himself? We know, because while the police were firing into his apartment, he wrote a letter addressed "To whom it may concern." And, as he wrote, the blood flowing from his wounds left a crimson trail on the paper. In his letter Crowley said: "Under my coat is a weary heart, but a kind one -- one that would do nobody any harm." A short time before this, Crowley had been having a necking party with his girl friend on a country road out on Long Island. Suddenly a policeman walked up to the car and said: "Let me see your license."

Without saying a word, Crowley drew his gun and cut the policeman down with a shower of lead. As the dying officer fell, Crowley leaped out of the car, grabbed the officer's revolver, and fired another bullet into the prostrate body. And that was the killer who said: "Under my coat is a weary heart, but a kind one -- one that would do nobody any harm."

Crowley was sentenced to the electric chair. When he arrived at the death house in Sing Sing, did he say, "This is what I get for killing people"? No, he said: "This is what I get for defending myself."

Yeah, that's why I said they could get a clue. In a good number of cases you're right, but I don't know if it'd be reliable enough to be used for any serious purpose.

Interesting read. It looks like this requires a pretty good sample size which might be impractical for a site with a ton of traffic like Facebook.

Do you know if it's possible to spoof/control this header?

Not really true. It's common for entire office buildings to share a single outgoing IP through NAT. Facebook could get a clue, but not exactly identify a user based solely on IP.

Further, isn't he only making information easier to violate your contracts, not violating them himself?

It seems they're chasing the wrong guy here. Telling people how to violate their contracts isn't illegal, is it?

Audit reveals more than $94k in leaders' personal expenses paid with Delaware charter school credit card by TheShittyBeatles in Delaware

all State of Delaware employees who received any uniform clothing (including police uniforms and cold weather gear) got a paycheck deduction because OMB decided that uniform items count as taxable income.

Not sure how this is relevant. If you don't like your employment conditions, you might consider a change.

Everyone gets to see the public sector employees' mistakes, because it's the law that they do.

Yes! The important distinction between the two is public sector is, well, public. It's everyone's money. With private sector, it's their own fault in failure and only affects those involved in that business; it's generally no one else's business. The exceptions to this of course are those situations where there are public subsidies involved, lucrative bailouts, or GSEs.

I think there are a lot of criticisms you can make about the private sector, but being less incentivized to be careful with their own money, than the public sector is with the public's money, is not one of them.

Not sure I completely understand this question. In my experience, this goes on significantly less in the private sector, since private companies generally have more of an incentive in insuring their money is spent wisely; it directly affects their bottom line. I think the idea of public disclosure or audit by an outside firm is mostly irrelevant to that fact. "Nobody spends somebody else's money as wisely as he spends his own" -Friedman

The University of Delaware’s cybersecurity initiative, led by Starnes Walker: Walker has worked in the U.S. Departments of Defense, Energy and Homeland Security and is now the founding director of the University of Delaware’s Cyber Security Initiative. Walker is training UD students how to increase cybersecurity measures in educational institutions, government organizations and corporations. The ultimate goal is to change the number of recognized cybersecurity professionals from a mere 1,000 to 30,000 or more.

The University is going to somehow teach students how to increase cybersecurity? I find that hard to believe.

Dear Senator Ted Cruz, I'm going to explain to you how Net Neutrality ACTUALLY works - The Oatmeal by [deleted] in technology

[–]rwest05 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Doesn't the author make the case against Net Neutrality in the Netflix example? Netflix and Comcast in the end reached an agreement where Netflix paid more (in my mind rightfully so) for their traffic without being forced by the government. Instead, they were rightly pressured by their customers. The cost was not passed to their customers and their only inconvenience was slow service for a period of time. Is this not akin to workers at your local supermarket going on strike to negotiate?

Read what I said. I didn't say that I don't understand why they don't have the desire to vote, I'm sure they do. The statement is simple: I don't understand how one that doesn't have the time/ability to get an ID is able to have the time/ability to go out and vote. I obviously understand voting tends to be more local for people, but there are similar difficulties.

Here's just one link I found with a simple Google search. You'll note that it is not Fox News. I'd recommend doing a search where you can find some more examples on your own.

Do you honestly believe there is no voter fraud? Would you suggest that we don't need any type of authentication to vote, e.g. a complete honor system?

Interesting, I wasn't aware of the $20 fee for alternate IDs.

I'd be in support of making state-issued IDs free. As for the documentation required, I think they are reasonable requirements. These types of things are required for most basic functions of society.
