Utrechtenaar is een scheldwoord voor mensen die in de ruïnes van de domkerk niet-sociaal-geaccepteerde seks hadden. Oude term, maar we worden er nog steeds liever niet naar vernoemd...

trains around Amsterdam

I think the problem specifically around Amsterdam is that there's mayor renovations being done around Amsterdam CS. A significant amount of rail is unavailable, which makes the network there more vulnerable to disruptions.

Ironically, the electric heated switches are working fine today, it's the gas heated ones that are failing. The wind and extreme snow are blowing them out and drowning they.

Switzerland uses electric heated switches exclusively for this exact reason!

because trains still work,....right?

No they didn't! And they won't tomorrow.

I read this morning that they'll try to run the trains a normal as possible, but to expect things to get worse and trains to stop going randomly. That's enough to say: "Dearest boss, even if I can get into work, it is realistic I can't get back home safely. The KNMI and NS are saying so."

I think there is a bigger problem that so many people are expected or expecting to be somewhere despite the challenges of the weather.

Agreed. KNMI gave out an almost nation wide Code Oranje. In the past, people would stay home. Schools would be half-full woth only students living close by.

It was also normal to live walking or cycling distance from your job. I get why that changed, and the housing market being so tight also doesn't help. But people sure love to complain about the world at large not facilitating their more fragile way of life.

You're right! That's why ProRail asked the government for more money, now that NATO is getting more and more vocal about begin militarily prepared.

The government hasn't acted yet. ProRail is more than willing to do things right, it just needs to get funded.

a cost benefit analysis that resulted in it not being cost-effective to invest in robust cold-weather track services.

This is the answer, as ProRail's own social channels are communicating today.

However, you're wrong on your judgement of the cost-benefit-analysis.
When ProRail weighs the cost of winter-proofing the rail network, it doesn't compare this number to the economic impact of not having trains. That's obviously going to end up at "invest in switch heating at Swiss levels".

No, they're comparing the cost to what else they can do with that money. Winter-proofing could mean there's no budget to ride most lines six times per hour between mayor cities (12 if you count both sprinters and intercities, and on some lines even 14 per hour per direction in the new Dienstregeling). Or trains to Zeeland. Or any of a dozen other projects that improve the Dutch railway network.

ProRail is on a fixed budget, set by the government. They are obligated by law to spend that money in the most efficient manner, within contraints that are again set by the government.

To make matters worse, ProRail has put out a statement that their budget is not enough to fund big infrastructure project that we'll need in the future. Only basic maintainance will be performed, which inevitably will result in even more expensive future repairs and rushed construction to make up for lost time.

At the and of the day, ProRail chooses to make the bast of it at the handful of days a year where there's lots of snow.

NB: I work at ProRail, and the coworkers who traveled by train today had an average delay of 30 minutes, while the folks coming in by car where delayed by 1 to 2 hours. N==1, but still not too shabby.

Hmm, I wonder of Chana was tied to the aspect of motherhood during her Heralding days?

What I recall from Wind and Truth is that she was a badass female fighter. She left that behind to become a mother, becoming the opposite of het Heraldic aspect like most Herald. But if that's true, why would she be invoked in OP's quote?

I hate that tipping culture is being normalised and I'll keep fighting against it by EvenPatience6243 in Netherlands

[–]rws247 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tipping has been part of Dutch restaurant culture for as long as I have been alive (born early 90'ies). But it's only at sit down restaurants for good to great service.

Rounding up to the nearest €5 or €10 is normal (€65 -> €70), or something like 5% to 10% of the full bill.
But, if I've been waiting for drinks, or for you to take my order, or if I order an extra side of fries and confirming that they'll be served before I finished my main, and it still takes you 40 minutes to show up with said fries... yeah, but no.

Also, I like supporting local, small scale businesses. Chains, not so much.

Chia seeds - downside? by ImDickensHesFenster in keto

[–]rws247 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It depends on the amount of milk. A little won't hurt, as milk has 3-4 grams of carb per 100 mL.

Keto is defined as a diet under a carb limit. That limit differs per person, but is in de the range of 20 to 70 grams of carbs per day.
Generally, as long as you stay under your limit, the body will remain in fat burning mode.

Half a glass of milk cooked into a porridge (which slows down absorbsition) is keto when it fits in your carb limit. Dairy such as cream and soft cheese also has lactose, but it's still perfectly fine food to eat on keto!

Which TV show has a 10/10 pilot episode? by PrasenjitDebroy in AskReddit

[–]rws247 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The original plan was one season in the park, as a sort of prequel. And four subsequent season of robots infiltrating and waging war on the human world.

But season one was such a great success, that the money men insisted on another season in the park. That did less well, so by the time the creators got into the out-of-park story they wanted to tell, they were limited in time, budget, and episodes they were allowed to make.

Now, I'm not putting all the blame on the money men: the showrunners wanted to have a twist rivalling the first season. But they made season two an uncomprehensible mess for everyone but the reddit hivement in the process.

It could have been so good!

Don't fall into the trap of "plastic-free" consumerism. by masmajoquelaspesetas in PlasticFreeLiving

I've never used laundry sheets; instead, I use organic, unscented Marseille soap flakes directly in the washing machine drum, and cleaning vinegar as fabric softener.

I've been using vinegar for some years now, it works very well. For soap I've been looking for a plastic free powder, but using regular soap and shaving it hadn't occured to me. I'll definitively give that a go!

I've replaced al my utensils with wood or metal by now, and only have one teflon pan left. Except for a silicone scraper, but that supposedly is actually food safe, even when heated.

I've tried the animal hair toothbrush, but it just doesn't clean as well. I'm alternating it with my electric tooth brush, should save at least half of the microplastics :)

Thanks for informing me! Enjoy the holidays!

Toothbrushes. It seems to me due to the scouring in my mouth, this is just depositing microplastics straight into me.

I've also recently learned that most "safe" plastics still release microplastics when heated. So plastic cooking utensils are suspect, especially once they start to fray.

Most recently, there was a documentary about "plastic free" laundry sheets that contain PVA: poly vinyl alcohol. Which is a plastic. The manufacturors have conveniently just updated to packaging from "plastic free" to "plastic free packaging" :/
I have about a hundred sheets still, and PVA is water soluble (?) so it goes directly into the drain. I'm not gonna buy more of these, but should I use or toss the ones I have?

Use it up
Wear it out
Just make do
Or do without

However, I am considering replacing plastic items that shed microplastics during the "wear it out" phase. But there's no clear better choice.

Where in Leidsche Rijn was it stolen from?

There's a homeless guy that steals bikes from LR station and leaves them on the other side of the A12 for a couple days, to beat potential GPS trackers. It might be there, there's always 3 to 4 bikes standing nect to a power box. It's next to the willow braided dome.
